(More customer reviews)I love Melissa & Doug toys because they are educational, innovative and lead-free. However, though this toy is great because of the educational aspect and the magnetics, my son and I were disappointed that the shapes don't align and fit together properly because they have rounded tips. This makes it hard to make the patterns it comes with. If your child would be frustrated because they want it to fit perfectly, then you might consider their other pattern block sets in the wooden box. They have a Beginner one and another one which has more pieces. These have straight lines because they are not magnetic. Here are the links to these two products.

They both love to build and the Octons can keep their attention for quite awhile. They are well made, fit together and come apart easily (not requiring any parent help), and their constructions stay together while they play with them.

(More customer reviews)My 3 year old loves this set of blocks and creating new patterns. She especially likes to have an adult work one half of the puzzle and then she problem solves and works the other half. My 5 year old also enjoys working with the patterns but not as much and she is more independent when working with it. Overall it is well worth the money. I was surprised with how well my kids like to play with it.

(More customer reviews)I bought this toy because my children loved to play with pattern blocks at science and art museums. This was the only toy I found with real wood blocks that were the size and feel of the toys they had played with earlier. Using the blocks alone, my children loved to create an endless number of beautiful geometric patterns. The toy encourages creativity and promotes mathematical thinking.
My daughter, who was five or six at the time, tried using the picture boards. At her age, she was able to do it although it was frustrating when the pieces moved out of place. For awhile, she thought that she had to use the picture boards in order to play with the toy properly. Once she got over that, we had a wonderful toy again.
If you throw away the picture boards from the beginning and let your child's creativity take over, you have a 5 star toy that even older children and adults enjoy tinkering with.
