My niece is two and loves this toy. She plays for hours at a time and likes to mimic the sounds. I always buy educational toys and feel that Leapfrog has toys for all ages and children learn as they play. How can you beat that? If you want your child to be entertained and learn at the same time BUY THIS TOY!

LeapPad Phonics Program Activity Book, I Know My Blends and Digraphs Review

LeapPad Phonics Program Activity Book, I Know My Blends and Digraphs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hi, I'm StoryMaker. I have to disagree with the other reviewer. For one thing, touching a blend or digraph will cause its sound to be said in this LeapPad book. In addition, there are some fun games that can help kids practice. I think that, with practice, kids can use this book to master many different blends & digraphs. It is not only fun for kids, but it also can teach a lot of different blends & digraphs. One of the only problems I can think of is that, when a blend or digraph is touched, the LeapPad responds by saying "the blend sound, [whatever you touched]". This actually caused me to forget all about digraphs and think it was all just blends. Also, they don't really say the definition of blends or digraphs in the first place (it would be better if they did). Still, I believe that this is a good way to teach kids about many different blends & digraphs. However, you might want to also explain what a blend or digraph is, since this book doesn't offer that information. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"

Fridge Words Magnetic Word Builder Review

Fridge Words Magnetic Word Builder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was delighted to find out the magnets from the Fridge Phonics Magnetic Letter set also work with this! So if you have both, you can spell out double lettered words (such as "dad" and "mom" (and it is programmed to read those words, as well!)
The only problems we've been having with it are related to the tinny sound. The Fridge Phonics Magnetic Letter set sounded nice, but the Word Whammer sound quality is poorer. I know I had a hard time telling "Find the 'F'" from "Find the 'S'". Lucky for us adults, if we know what word it wants us to spell, we know which letter, but it confounds the kids.
If it weren't for the sound quality the toy would be *perfect*. It is really well designed, and very effective at keeping the kid's interest long enough for them not to realize they're learning while they're having fun. If you don't mind needing to translate what the machine said every so often, I highly recommend this.

LeapFrog Leapster Learning Game Pet Pals Review

LeapFrog Leapster Learning Game Pet Pals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With the digital pet craze for the past several years (and still growing) it was just a matter of time for LeapFrog to develop something to tap into it.
I just purchased the Pet Pals game for my 3.5 year old son, who has had a Leapster since his 3rd birthday.
The game begins by having the player choose one of three dogs and then naming the dog they chose instead of entering the player's name like in other Leapster games. Pet Pals then takes you to a virtual home with an entry area, a living area and a kitchen. Each room has things to click on (leash, wall picture, couch pillow, etc.) to play games. There are numerous amounts of games to choose from, some of which offer different levels. You earn "love" points for playing the games and you also earn coins that are stored in a piggy bank which you can spend at a store to buy food, shampoo, treats and clothing.
My son's current favorite games are the letter-writing practice (which is similar to the Mr. Pencil's letter-writing game, but is slightly less sensitive and less frustrating), the dog-walking (which has levels and depending on the level, for example, asks the player to walk the dog down streets collecting all the capital letters), and the tricks game (which has the player follow a series of instructions three times in order to teach their dog a particular trick). There are many more games to choose from such as dog washing, toss-and-catch, dress your dog and others. Playing all of these games ultimately leads to the player choosing the "dog show" game, where most of the other games are done collectively in order for the player's dog to win the dog show.
Now, with all of this going on, there is still the "virtual pet" part of the game where the player needs to care for their pet. The dog needs to be fed, watered, scratched, taken for walks (leads to dog-walking game), etc. The player needs to respond to his dog's needs in order to gain more love points. I read in the instructions that the player can loose love points for not taking care of their pet, but I have not paid attention to see how this happens.
This is probably my favorite Leapster game so far (out of all the Pre-K games) and seems to hold my son's interest much longer than any of the others ever have, even when they were brand-new. It has so many different game choices that will keep a player's attention for long periods and the idea of taking care of their own virtual pet (even though we have two real live ones) is it's own attraction to the game.
I HAVE ONE HUGE COMPLAINT! At the beginning, the player earns their dog an adoption certificate by following just a few care instructions for their pet. Pet Pals tells the player to go to www.leapsterworld.com to enter the secret code to print out their dog's adoption certificate. The problem is that LeapFrog has not yet (as of July '07) updated their LeapsterWorld website with the Pet Pals game. When you go into the Secret Codes section on the website, Pet Pals is not yet available to choose from for code entering. I have sent LeapFrog an email a few days ago and have not received a response. I would think that an educational toy company such as LeapFrog would have updated their website appropriately to correspond with the release of a game. My son is very dissapointed that he cannot print out his dog's adoption certificate. I guess I'll have to design my own for him until LeapFrog takes care of this, which I have no doubt they will.

This will help you to learn important reading and math skills as you feed, groom and care for your puppy, take it for walks, play catch, and more. Then show what you know in the big dog show and win "money" by showing off your smarts. Kids will learn phonics skills, counting, letter writing and responsibility. For use with the Leapster Learning System or Leapster TV Learning System, this is sold separately.

Fisher-Price Fun-2-Learn Computer Cool School Review

Fisher-Price Fun-2-Learn Computer Cool School
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We have tried a few 'early computer learning toys' and found them wanting. This is the first one I have seen that is properly interactive, bug free, and well built.
My kid is only 2, so he is officially too young. But frankly, he has mastered the paint part of it already; he is quickly learning the rest.
A few technical points:
1. Yes, its like a USB keyboard but it does not act as a keyboard if the software is not running. So, the kid is not going to be able to mess with your PC outside of the software--a good thing. The software auto-launches and closes with the on-keyboard "power button" so the kid can start it up without help. My kid is 2 yrs old and learned that fast.
2. The tablet is like a tablet, not a mouse. Its position on the screen is absolute rather than relative. It might take the adult (me) a bit to get used to. My kid finds it easy, but he doesn't have 20 years of habit to overcome :).
3. The docs are evasive about where the kids drawings are saved. Here is the answer for Windows XP users:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Fisher-Price\Computer
Cool School\US\User0\Base
The 'Application Data' directory is normally hidden. Substitute 'User0' with the relative position on the log in screen. The files are regular .png graphics files. Fair warning: don't change these files. The software won't expect that. This is simply a hint for making a copy of them to email to friend/grandparents :).
If there is any downside to this thing, it is that it contains a limited amount of content. The kid hasn't explored all of it yet, but I suspect I'll end up buying the software expansions.
---------------
FOLLOW-UP: A few friends of mine have tried running this product with Windows Vista. Very buggy. I only now recommend this for XP users. Typical of many toy manufacturers, they simply don't get software. It is not a "make once and forget about it" thing. You have to keep and plan for updates as the industry changes. The price they sell it to distributors for should account for those future costs.

Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read Pre-K Deluxe Edition Review

Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read Pre-K Deluxe Edition

We recently had to replace our computer, and it came with Windows 7 installed on it. These CD-ROMs were made before Windows 7 came out, and none of the music videos play on our computer. My daughter can play the games, but can't play any of the videos. I called HOP and they said these are outdated. The newest versions of HOP are made for DVD players. They offered no resolution to the issue. She is dissappointed, and so am I.

VTech ABC Food Fun 26 Magnets Review

VTech ABC Food Fun 26 Magnets
Average Reviews:

I got this item after having the letter set. I can definitely say it is older technology as the pieces are harder to place than the letter fit to the newer version. It also talks too much which could cause focusing problems. But it is very fun afterall as my 16 month old goes back to it again and again.
The only complaint, the door, once shut, is very hard to open.

LeapFrog Sing-Along Read-Along Review

LeapFrog Sing-Along Read-Along
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was very excited to get this. I have a 3.5 and 1.5 year old. I plugged it in a pushed play. The kids were fascinated by it at first, then bored with it after about 5 segments.
I watched it with them and did not appreciate some of the ideas that the video was passing on. Value #1 I didn't agree with is being scared of the dark and monsters in the dark. To make the a sound, the video was having the characters scream when a light was turned off. I am fortunate that my kids are not afraid of the dark, never have been, and I am reluctant to show them something that indicates that they should be afraid of the dark. #2 for the i sound, it emphasized the word "ick' and said ick is the what you say when you don't like dinner. Again, we don't use this kind of language around dinner. #3 One of the characters took away another's toys, then the first character got mad and took them all back. I prefer to emphasize sharing and asking, rather than taking.
I didn't make it through all 12 segments, so cannot give a complete overview of all of it. After 5 segments, me and the kids had had enough.
