Pros: simple to set up and play, encourages physical activity, appeals to wide age range
Cons: some movements called for are impossible, it would be good to have more cards
My three-year-old daughter got this for Christmas, and has played it a few times with her six-year-old sister, who can read. The two of them got it out and figured out how to play it by themselves. I played it with the three-year-old as well. My six-year-old daughter had played a similar game at school so she understood the basic idea.
The game is a cross between Memory and Simon Says. There are three types of cards: red (movement type), blue (target), and yellow (how to hold the fish (a foam cut-out of the fish in the bowl from Cat in the Hat)). The cards are laid out face-down in a grid as you would in a Memory game. The players take turns choosing three cards and turning them over. If a player gets one of each color, they have to follow the directions on the cards. For example, a combination could be Hopping (red movement card) to the Front Door and back (blue target card) with the Fish under your right arm (yellow fish-holding card). If the player successfully does the task, they keep the cards. If the player doesn't turn up three different colors, he or she flips the cards over and the next player takes a turn.
In general, this is a great game for younger kids. It helps to have a reader playing, although the illustrations on the cards help show the players what to do. There are some more challenging movements like crab-walking that could give players some problems. I'm also at a loss as to how one would hold the fish between one's elbows while crab-walking. I don't know anyone who could do that without hurting oneself. It would also be good to have a few more cards. There are 24 in the deck, and if more that two players are playing it doesn't take long to get through all the combinations.
Overall this is a good game to get the wiggles out and have some silly fun. It was very comical to watch my daughters hop around with the fish on their heads, and there were lots of giggles. I think we will replace the crab-walking with bear-walking next time so that we can all enjoy the game a little more.
