This game requires advance reading and spelling skills, that a 4 year does not have. My 6 year old niece even had difficulties spelling some of the words. The suggested ages for the game is 4-6. I would say the starting age would be 6, unless your 4 year old can spell really well.

Vtech - V.Smile - Shrek the Third: Arthur's School Day Adventure Review

Vtech - V.Smile - Shrek the Third: Arthur's School Day Adventure

My granddaughter has several of the V.smile cartridges and this is the most difficult as far as user input. Controlling the direction that you want the character to move is nigh on to impossible!! As soon as you think you know what the game is using for directions(forward, backward, etc.)it will change. It is VERY frustrating for adults as well as the children it is supposed to be created for. There seems to be good educational value here if it could just be accessed.
I would recommend Dora, The Backyardigans, & The Little Mermaid as better alternitives.

Vtech - V.Smile TV Learning System - Pink
I purchased this product from Amazon on 2007 X'mas for my 3 years old grand-daughter X'mas gift. My daughter thought that she was so small for this game. So she waited until 2008 X'mas when she was 4. MY grand-daughter was so happy when she got the game. Each day we only allowed her to play not more than 2 hours on TV games. She played everyday, but on the fifth day, the game had on response. We tried and tried but useless. We believed that the problem must be the Writing Pad Joystick. We tried to open it to find out what was wrong. But it was tightly sealed and cannot be opened. So the TV Learning System became gabage. My grand-daughter was very sad. I don't know whether I should replace a new Joystick or not. If the new one is the same as the old one only last for a few days. I prefer to buy another game for her.

Vtech - V.Smile - Ratatouille Review

Our Experience
I purchased this for my 4yr old daughter who has nine other V.Smile Smartridges in her library. My daughter had been asking for this game because she had enjoyed to movie so much. We put the Smartridge in her V.Smile and started the game. Right from the beginning, I knew we were in trouble with this game. In my opinion, its geared for a slightly older crowd. I played along with my daughter and it became clear that she was getting frustrated quickly. She finally gave up and told me she didn't want to play anymore. Normally, the directions are clearly spelled out for the user but, that's not the case with this game. We learned to play the games by trial and error. The final reason that caused my daughter to give up was when she attempted to play the, "Anyone Can Cook", game. She decided to play the game on her V.Smile Pocket and the game would not respond to the joystick controllers and repeatedly told her she was out of time. Even I tried to play to no avail. It was quite frustrating to me so, I can only imagine how frustrating it was for my 4yr old.
Smartridge Activities
Learning Adventure
The Maze to the Market - Guide Remy through the town back to the Market. Help him avoid obstacles (obstacles are not very clear) along the way.
Choosing Ingredients - You are prompted to find a food item of a particular color but, only one with steam coming from it. After finding each item, you are prompted to label it as a fruit, veggie, etc. Because the items can be very small, its hard to tell what some are and therefore you can often guess the wrong category.
Into the Sewers - Guide Remy through the Sewer trying to find torn pieces of a puzzle that you will put together later. You have to avoid obstacles which, again, can be confusing. We went through the entire sewer unaware of what the torn pieces of the list looked like. They weren't easily recognizable. We had to restart the game and try picking up what we thought was more obstacles to see what the torn puzzle pieces actually looked like. Even the manual doesn't show a picture of them.
The Puzzling List - This is actually an easy game. It is just as its name suggests...a puzzle that needs to be put back together.
Back to the Kitchen - This game is similar to the Maze to the Market game. The only addition to the game is that you have to collect missing letters along the way to complete listed words.
Anyone Can Cook - Linguini picks up pieces of food and tells you that you need to cut specific amounts of it. You are supposed to use your joystick to simulate the cutting motion but our V.Smile Pocket joystick didn't respond to the commands. Regardless, it was a pretty boring game.
Learning Zone
Please Be Seated - Use your joystick to put name cards on the table back in alphabetical order.
Finishing Touches - Help Remy put garnishes on the dishes by picking the correct color or category of each food he asks for.
Stacking the Dishes - This game is similar to the old ring stacking games. You have to stack the dishes in order from biggest to smallest.
Sniffing Out the Cheese - This game is all about Math. You help Emile find the cheese at the end of each pipe. First, you sold the math equation and then lead Emile to that pipe to collect the cheese.
Microphone Section
Fun with French - You can use your microphone to learn to say different French expressions. You can use the book on the screen to pick and choose what words you want to learn.
Compatibility
The Microphone section only works with the V.Smile TV Learning System Plus, and V.Smile Pocket.

Don't rat them out! Help Remy and Linguine create a new dish with a surprise secret ingredient. Travel the streets of Paris with Remy to root out just the right fixings and heaps of learning. Be the big cheese and lend Remy a hand when he discovers an unexpected mousetrap which will lead your gourmet rat pack underground.
Chock-full of learning, the Ratatouille V.Smile Smartridge teaches food categories and recognition, counting, number order, colors, puzzles, map reading, cooking methods, motor/drawing skills, directions and logical thinking and patterns. Based on the hit movie. For use with the V.Smile TV Learning System Plus, sold separately.

This toy has been a life saver for long trips, doctor's office visits, boring trips to the grocery store, but you should know the screen scratches really easily. Also, the cases hold so few games. we have probably 12 or 13 games, all wonderful for teaching, but you can only get two or three in the carrying cases. that being said, my son loves this game, and it beats the heck out of the mindless video games that are the beginning of brain death. cute and educational, just wish the darned thing didn't get scratched so easily.

Who says education and fun don't go hand in hand? The portable VTech V.Smile Pocket Learning System combines video games and educational content for brain-building, on-the-go game play or connecting directly to a television at home. Specifically designed for children between ages five and eight, the Pocket V.Smile is a fun way to learn for both enthusiastic and reluctant students. Built For Kids The Pocket V.Smile's full-color LCD screen with a 320-by-240 pixel resolution competes with the "big kid" video game systems. A unique alternative to other systems, the V.Smile is built inside and out with young children in mind. The big buttons are made for a child's hands, and the games build skills in spelling, logic, counting, problem solving, phonics, and vocabulary. Kids get so engrossed with the V.Smile that they won't even realize how much they're developing their minds in language, science and math. Because they can carry the handheld device wherever they go, kids can learn and play independently while parents can rest assured they are providing something healthy, age-appropriate, and educational. At Home Or On-The-Go With the included A/V cable, the Pocket V.Smile hooks up directly to televisions as well, requiring no additional equipment. Not only does this option keep kids in one place and allow them to learn and play using a larger screen, but it also makes it easier for them to share the in the fun with friends and siblings -- even parents. More Favorites The Pocket V.Smile plays all the same "Smartridges" for the original V.Smile system. This learning system comes bundled with one Smartridge called Zayzoo My Alien Classmate, which teaches skills in math, shapes, time concepts, music, directions, English, and more. A wide selection of other wholesome video games are available separately, involving many favorite characters like Scooby Doo, Dora, Thomas, and Shrek. The Pocket V.Smile requires four "AA" heavy duty batteries (included); alkaline batteries are recommended for longer life and optimum performance. What's in the Box Pocket V.Smile, one Smartridge, A/V cable, wrist strap, manual, and four "AA" batteries.

V Tech Vtech - V.Smile Tv Learning System - Pink Review

V Tech Vtech - V.Smile Tv Learning System - Pink
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Education for us comes first so when we were choosing a educational game system, it definitely took some thought. We really couldn't decide so we bought both with the thought that we would keep the one that works best for us. Here is our review on both systems.
Leapster TV- I bought this system off of Walmart.com on sale for 39.99 ( reg. price 49.99) with a free extra controller ( which normally costs 19.99!). The game that came with this system was Dora, but since my 3 1/2 year old daughter hates Dora, we bought letterpillar. I had read the reviews for this system and heard the complaints about the graphics but I figured since she never played/ or seen a games system since neither my husband or I are into games, that it wouldn't matter to her. I was wrong.... the first thing she said when I turned it on was 'there's something wrong with the TV.... it looks funny!' She did play the dora game and my complaint was there is not a menu where you can choose the game you want to play. It goes straight in to a dialog and then pinata whacking at letters. After whacking at the letters it takes you to the last game on the game card which is throwing a ball at a pin with another letter. That was it! No other games, nothing! If I am going to pay 24.99 per game, I would like to get my money worth. And it wasn't just the Dora game that didn't have a main menu, the letterpillar didn't have one either and the graphics were the same...old and dated looking.
Now, I have had other leap frog products that I was very impressed with, but this system let me down. I was expecting so much more and my daughter didn't seem so interested... but i heard the handheld version is so much better than the home version...
The pros: games seem educational
The cons: graphics, no opening menu, limited games per cartridge
V.Smile Plus ( the newer version with the microphone and stylus)- I bought this system from Toys R US for 49.99. The game that came with this system was Alphabet Park Adventure. This game has a menu at the beginning with multiple games to choose from: Alphabet Adventure, Alphabet learning, and sing along. The alphabet adventure has 6 games to choose from to help grandpa find the rings to make his carnival work again. Oh, and there is a way in the option section to allow my daughter to have continuous life and if she dies, it starts her off where she last was ( very nice option to avoid frustration!). In the learning part has 4 different games to choose from. They are trace the alphabet ( both upper and lower letters), early spelling ( a letter will be missing and you have to find it), matching ( find the upper and lower case letters and put them together), and colors and shapes. And the sing along has about 4 songs where she can karaoke to.
I am very impressed with the V.smile. Especially the attachments it has. You can buy attachments for a dance mat, computer keyboard, joystick with or without the stylus, and an art studio game. And my daughter seems to like playing this system a lot better than the other one. The first time she played, I had to coach her, but after the first hour, she can now do it by herself. And my princess loving daughter loves the fact that you can get this system in pink!
V. Smile Pros: better graphics, lots of games per cartridge, attachment choices, opening menu, choice in system color.
V. Smile Cons: although my daughter has learned from the games so far, I wish v.smile had some of the game choices that leapster has.

The Wiggles V.Smile Smartridge Review

The Wiggles V.Smile Smartridge
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this because my Daughter loves the wiggles. My husband had problems trying to play the games. It is no way suitable for the age 3-5. It should be more like age 5 - 8. Oh but most children that age don't like the wiggles. Why didn't they just make it number recognition instead of addition. I frankly do not no any 3, 4, or 5 year olds who can add numbers beyond the 1 + 1 = 2. Game is just way to hard for the age recommended.

Vtech V.Smile TV Learning System Review

Vtech V.Smile TV Learning System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Electronics are evolving into pretty much every area of life, and that includes Early Learning. Apart from PC software, and stand-alone toys, a new approach follows the `games console' line: a console that you can hook up to your television so your little one can play games that will teach him or her counting, the alphabet, and the basic reading/writing/'rithmetic. Whether this approach actually `works', in terms of teaching children the basics, remains to be seen - it's too early for any useful research evidence.
Two of the front-runners in this evolution are the V.Smile from VTech, and the Clickstart `First Computer' from Leapfrog. Both are fairly cheap plastic battery-powered consoles pitched at 3- to 6/8-year-olds; both come with initial free software, and have a range of additional software available as cartridges, mostly themed on popular cartoon/comic characters (Disney, Thomas the Tank Engine, Superman etc). Unable to decide which (if either) of these might be helpful for our three-year-old boy, we decided to buy both and try them out. This is what we found.
The V.Smile is slightly more expensive (AU$119 for the console, plus AU$40 per software cartridge). It seems like the better machine in a lot of respects. There is a much wider range of software (about 30 cartridges available), catering from 3-to-5-year-olds up to 6-to-8-year-olds. It looks better engineered: sound output can be in stereo; there is a built-in compartment for storing your cartridges; there is a microphone (which we haven't used yet); and, although battery-powered (4 x AA), you can also run it off the mains - though, somewhat annoyingly, you have to buy a separate AC adapter. The user manual leaflet is somewhat better than that of its competitor, though both are adequate and both systems were quite easy to set-up without the manual.
However, its appearance gives the game away for the V.Smile: it looks like a cartoon version of a Playstation, and the interface is joystick-based (one supplied, with the option to add a second). It is first and foremost a games console, and the software confirms this: the activities are essentially `platform games' (think Donkey Kong or Super Mario), with a fairly thin serving of word/number/pattern/colour recognition thrown in. It was readily apparent that the main entertainment lay in manoeuvring, jumping, and evading hazards, and the basics of this were beyond our three-year-old at his first sitting; in contrast, the puzzles shown (`which one is the apple?' `pick the red circle' etc) posed little or no challenge to him at all. Although he had great fun (with Daddy's help), I'm not sure he learnt anything at all in an hour's test run.
The Clickstart got off to a poorer start, despite being a bit cheaper (AU$98 for the console, and AU$31.50 per cartridge). For openers, it's packaged in that annoying wire-and-sticky-tape fashion that takes at least half-an-hour to get out of the box and generally requires destroying a substantial amount of the packaging. There seem to be only six software cartridges available, aiming up to 6-year-olds. It does have the big advantage of being cordless, relying on an infra-red transmitter rather like your remote. We thought this might be a problem for our projector (being behind the child, as opposed to a TV screen in front of them), but it proved to be no problem at all unless someone stood in front of the IR receiver - presumably the IR signal is reflected from the wall. However, this does also mean that there are two components each requiring batteries (4 x AA and 4 x C), with no option for an AC adapter.
But - and it's a big but - the Clickstart is quite clearly based on a computer, not a games console. The interface is a QWERTY keyboard, with a simple one-button mouse; it can register different `users', if you have more than one child; and the home screen is a simplistic `point-and-click' GUI. A cute puppy called Scout is your guide to the system (and our boy LOVES puppies). The built-in games are more varied in format, and richer in content, than those of the V.Smile; they focus on developing both conceptual skills (numbers, letters, shapes, colours etc) and interface skills (how to use a keyboard and mouse). Even with no keyboard skills at all, our three-year-old could still have a grand time pressing random keys to collect alphabetical fruit or bring up phonetic-linked pictures. But by the end of an hour or so, he was starting to recognise individual digits (`press the 8 key'), and was getting the hang of the mouse. The cartridge games we tried were somewhat more `platform'-like, but with less emphasis on tricky manoeuvring and more emphasis on picking the right shape/number/colour, and some counting. The cartridge graphics seem to have come from the 1980s, but our three-year-old could recognise Buzz and Woody and Emperor Zurg and that was good enough for him! And whereas the V.Smile cartridges are each pitched at a specific age range, the Clickstart games and cartridges each contain different levels for different age groups - making up to some degree for the fact that there are fewer of them.
So my vote goes to the Clickstart, simply because it aims to be an educational toy computer rather than an educational games console; and (on the basis of a short test run), it actually seems to achieve some education. On the other hand, for an older child who's already hooked on video games, the V.Smile probably stands a better chance of getting their attention, and perhaps keeping it with the older-age-group cartridges and two-player options. I'm still not convinced that either of these systems is really the best way to teach children their numbers and letters; and I realise that nothing will take the place of hours of input from an enthusiastic adult. But I'd much rather see my toddler having fun with a keyboard than a joystick, particularly if that's going to set any sort of pattern for the future.

Vtech - V.Smile - V.Smile Pocket Car Charger Review

Vtech - V.Smile - V.Smile Pocket Car Charger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a v-smile console and lots of cartridges, and when I saw this car charger I was very excited at the possibility of using it in the car with the console that my sons already use with our SUV's DVD entertainment system. We had been using the batteries which worked fine, but wanted to avoid the screaming that came along with the batteries running out during a long trip.
I looked at the company website, which made no mention of using the car charger with the console, but interestingly enough the website did say that the AC adapter for the console also worked with the Pocket V-Smile. Hmmmmm. So I called the company, and the very unfriendly customer service rep would not answer my question -- does the car charger work with the console? The company line was stated over and over "the car charger was made to work with the Pocket V-Smile." I asked why if the AC adapter worked with the Pocket would the car charger not work with the console? Again the same statement. That was all the information I needed.
I immediately ordered the car charger, and yes, it works perfectly with the console unit! Why this is such a big secret I don't know, since I could have kept using the batteries (and this would NOT have "made" me buy a Pocket unit!). The purchase of the car charger was money very well spent considering how much my kids love playing this thing and how much time we spend in the car.

This game is completely educational and lots of fun. My soon to be 3 years old loved it and was able to get through number and alphabetical sequencing. Even my 8 year old enjoyed playing it and going through the obstacles. There was something intriguing and challenging for all three of my boys:2, 5, and 8 years old. I have over 8 of the games and I have to say this one is the best so far and the only one I have that all three have no problems playing. It's very informative about animals, and teaches the 3 "R's" making learning totally exciting and fun!

Vtech - V.Smile - Spider-Man and Friends
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have to agree with a couple of the other reviews. This game is a little challenging for young kids. I would think it is good for a typical first grader. That being said, this is my son's favorite of the games because of the characters. He always chooses this one, but becomes frustrated very easily. So, I end up playing. He loves the grocery store game (getting the supplies for the party). I HATE IT. It takes forever and the items on the list don't really look like the items on the shelves. I guess with some practice you would be able to get around the store maze quickly and get the items, but it takes me a while...and then paying for them...again counting out every coin for an endless stream of items. It does hold my son's attention span while I play, but as an adult, I think some of the other games (like Scooby Doo) are more entertaining.
