Vtech - V.Smile - Shrek the Third: Arthur's School Day Adventure Review

Vtech - V.Smile - Shrek the Third: Arthur's School Day Adventure
Average Reviews:

My granddaughter has several of the V.smile cartridges and this is the most difficult as far as user input. Controlling the direction that you want the character to move is nigh on to impossible!! As soon as you think you know what the game is using for directions(forward, backward, etc.)it will change. It is VERY frustrating for adults as well as the children it is supposed to be created for. There seems to be good educational value here if it could just be accessed.
I would recommend Dora, The Backyardigans, & The Little Mermaid as better alternitives.

Vtech - V.Smile TV Learning System - Pink
I purchased this product from Amazon on 2007 X'mas for my 3 years old grand-daughter X'mas gift. My daughter thought that she was so small for this game. So she waited until 2008 X'mas when she was 4. MY grand-daughter was so happy when she got the game. Each day we only allowed her to play not more than 2 hours on TV games. She played everyday, but on the fifth day, the game had on response. We tried and tried but useless. We believed that the problem must be the Writing Pad Joystick. We tried to open it to find out what was wrong. But it was tightly sealed and cannot be opened. So the TV Learning System became gabage. My grand-daughter was very sad. I don't know whether I should replace a new Joystick or not. If the new one is the same as the old one only last for a few days. I prefer to buy another game for her.

Vtech Tote and Go Laptop Review

Vtech Tote and Go Laptop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wow! I am so glad I bought this. After reading reviews on all of the other "laptops" for children, I decided on this one after thorough research. Most complaints with other parents on the other laptops was about the LCD screen being so small, while the screen on this is perfect for its size and intent. I did not have trouble seeing anything. So it doesn't light up, I'm thankful, that's one less battery to replace. The other complaint I read about the others is that they were loud. This one is not. My children playing with their toys doesn't disturb me though. If they are learning & interacting with the toy, I'm happy.
Another fun feature on this paticular "laptop" is that it has a working mouse. You can click to enter & move it slightly left or right or up & down (it is attached to the pad) to get to another activity or participate in one of the thirty plus fun games that offer pre-K learning & Kindergarten learing...find the shape that is bigger, etc... And yes I played with it to make sure everything worked correctly & to see what & how it would be teaching my children. It does teach & it has been fun for mine. It is a sturdy laptop with more bang for the buck than the rest of the other "laptops with many complaints" out there. You will be glad you purchased this for your little one. I have NO COMPLAINTS with this product. I also get involved with my children as much as I can to show them how learning can be fun. This purchase has been a smart one! Thank you Amazon!!! Go VTech !!!!

Vtech - V.Smile Pocket Learning System Review

This toy has been a life saver for long trips, doctor's office visits, boring trips to the grocery store, but you should know the screen scratches really easily. Also, the cases hold so few games. we have probably 12 or 13 games, all wonderful for teaching, but you can only get two or three in the carrying cases. that being said, my son loves this game, and it beats the heck out of the mindless video games that are the beginning of brain death. cute and educational, just wish the darned thing didn't get scratched so easily.

Who says education and fun don't go hand in hand? The portable VTech V.Smile Pocket Learning System combines video games and educational content for brain-building, on-the-go game play or connecting directly to a television at home. Specifically designed for children between ages five and eight, the Pocket V.Smile is a fun way to learn for both enthusiastic and reluctant students. Built For Kids The Pocket V.Smile's full-color LCD screen with a 320-by-240 pixel resolution competes with the "big kid" video game systems. A unique alternative to other systems, the V.Smile is built inside and out with young children in mind. The big buttons are made for a child's hands, and the games build skills in spelling, logic, counting, problem solving, phonics, and vocabulary. Kids get so engrossed with the V.Smile that they won't even realize how much they're developing their minds in language, science and math. Because they can carry the handheld device wherever they go, kids can learn and play independently while parents can rest assured they are providing something healthy, age-appropriate, and educational. At Home Or On-The-Go With the included A/V cable, the Pocket V.Smile hooks up directly to televisions as well, requiring no additional equipment. Not only does this option keep kids in one place and allow them to learn and play using a larger screen, but it also makes it easier for them to share the in the fun with friends and siblings -- even parents. More Favorites The Pocket V.Smile plays all the same "Smartridges" for the original V.Smile system. This learning system comes bundled with one Smartridge called Zayzoo My Alien Classmate, which teaches skills in math, shapes, time concepts, music, directions, English, and more. A wide selection of other wholesome video games are available separately, involving many favorite characters like Scooby Doo, Dora, Thomas, and Shrek. The Pocket V.Smile requires four "AA" heavy duty batteries (included); alkaline batteries are recommended for longer life and optimum performance. What's in the Box Pocket V.Smile, one Smartridge, A/V cable, wrist strap, manual, and four "AA" batteries.

VTech Infant Learning Light-up Learning Camera Review

VTech Infant Learning Light-up Learning Camera
Average Reviews:

This toy camera was a gift, and as it looked pretty cool, we decided to save it for a big car trip that we were taking our 9 month old daughter on. She was delighted when we gave the camera to her, and played with it for hours. We decided to leave this toy in the car, as we like for her to be entertained while we are on the road. She absolutely adores this camera. And one of the best things about it is the variety of songs and sounds it has. My wife and I find ourselves singing those goofy songs from time to time. Recently, we lost this camera, and we are currently ordering another one. When you consider how much some toys are and how monotonous and repetitious sounding they are, this camera is a no-brainer.

My son plays with this first thing in the morning. (Luckily there are two settings for volume) Alphabet Town lights up and 'talks' to him. There are many settings like: clocks, music, simon says, directions, spelling and phonics. I really like the music button. My son likes to dance to the music of all the songs I have sung to him. I find it a good value due the variety of activities. It also fits on his lap and is very portable. I love watching him learn while having fun.

I have been waiting for this game to come out for my daughter as a reward for potty training. My daughter just turned 3 and this game was very easy for her navigate, as the previous poster stated some of other V-Smile games are hard to control. The graphics and characters voices are as if your watching the Cartoon Dora. This game is also very educational with teaching spanish and english colors and numbers. Also they teach animal sounds and recognition of animals (both underwater and farm animals). Today was the first day we had it so I'm sure I'm missing a lot in this review, but this game is by far the best V-Smile game of them all and we have all the V-Smile games (we keep up to date when the new games come out).

Vtech Sort 'n Go Car Review

Vtech Sort 'n Go Car
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just purchased this toy from Amazon based on the great reviews it had. Unfortunately I must have received a lemon. Upon opening the toy, I noticed that the red button on the front was broken, it doesn't press down, and it doesn't make any sounds. The other two buttons seem to work fine. Secondly, the shape sorter is next to impossible to use. There are these small blue buttons in the openings for the sorter that activate various sounds and learning for the toddler. The buttons on the toy I have, seem to be sticking out too much, so when you try to push a shape through, the side of the button blocks the opening so that the shape doesn't go through. Like other toys I have, I believe that when you push the shape through the opening, it is supposed to push in the button to make the sounds. This just doesn't work on my toy. I have contacted Vtech regarding these problems and am waiting for a response.
Other than those problems, the toy seems pretty cute. There is a rather long pull-along string that your toddler can pull, which you can also hide in the battery compartment. You can also push it along, and the wheels turning make the dog in the driver's seat sway side to side. There are also two modes, learning and music, which you can select on the top part. The three buttons in the "hood" of the van teach shapes and colors. The shapes are supposed to fit in the back of the van, which also opens in the back so the pieces can be taken out.
The only other downside is that there is no volume control. I guess I will probably put a sticker over the speaker part to muffle it a bit.
At this point, I am not considering giving this toy to my daughter at all, since the sorting is next to impossible and I don't want to confuse her when she puts the correct shape in each opening, only to have it not go through because of the button.
Hopefully Vtech will respond to me soon, so I can update this when it happens.
Okay, Vtech did not reply to my first email, so I sent it again, and after a couple days, Vtech sent me a basic email telling me to replace the batteries and then rapidly slide the on/off switch back and forth 40 times. That seems useless as this product has a push button on/off. Also, this won't help the fact that the red button sticks. The email also said to call them to get a return label if the problem persists.

We have had this product for a little over a month and the Leapster TV is a great product for people who purchased the Leapster before the L-Max. The kids love playing their game library on the TV. It is nice being able to see what they are learning on the big screen. I love the fact that it is compatible with every Leapster cartridge ever made. The controls are a little different from that of the Leapster heandheld but my son was able to adjust much faster than I was. You have the opton of one or two players and there is an additional slot to expand the unit to use two controllers. Overall, this is a good value and we have had a lot of fun with it.

Wow, I bought this same exact toy at W**mart as one of their brands for under ten bucks reg price, but thats a different story. For the price I bought it I think its a great buy. I purchased it specificaly for when my 14 month old son and I go out. It keeps him busy in his stroller or play at a table if we're out eating. Yes like any other toy it can get to us parents but it works keeping him entertained for longer period of time then other toys. I like the fact that it folds just like a laptop you can carry it in your hand by the handle. Pretty cute too, with different instruments and animal sounds and colorful screen with numbers and pictures. Not too loud or obnoxious. Also, I must add that its also very durable my son drops it million times a day and still works like brand new. My son loves it, we use it every day.

Vtech - Write and Learn Smartboard Review

Vtech - Write and Learn Smartboard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Someone at Vtech had a great idea, but the engineers just didn't follow through. The concept of this toy is great, but it just doesn't work as advertised.
My 5 yo daughter received one for her birthday and couldn't wait to start using it. She eagerly wrote her letters (correctly) in the box only to be told "Oops! Try again!" This happens at least 75% of the time! I have even gotten the same response when I write letters or numbers.
I understand that children need to learn to write letters a certain way, and the toy does teach that, but it won't accept most letters/numbers that ARE written correctly. There is also a time delay, so if the child starts to write the letter before the machine is ready, it doesn't "see" what has been written and assumes it was wrong.
If this toy is frustrating for the average parent, imagine how a 5 year old feels. I have taken out the batteries and hidden the toy because I can't stand the sound of it anymore (no volume control either - grrr) I don't want my child being told her writing is incorrect, when its not.

I bought this for my three-year-old son for Christmas. He loves it. My husband is deployed and this especially helped my son feel more connected to his father. Vtech V.Smile TV Learning System Review

Vtech V.Smile TV Learning System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Electronics are evolving into pretty much every area of life, and that includes Early Learning. Apart from PC software, and stand-alone toys, a new approach follows the `games console' line: a console that you can hook up to your television so your little one can play games that will teach him or her counting, the alphabet, and the basic reading/writing/'rithmetic. Whether this approach actually `works', in terms of teaching children the basics, remains to be seen - it's too early for any useful research evidence.
Two of the front-runners in this evolution are the V.Smile from VTech, and the Clickstart `First Computer' from Leapfrog. Both are fairly cheap plastic battery-powered consoles pitched at 3- to 6/8-year-olds; both come with initial free software, and have a range of additional software available as cartridges, mostly themed on popular cartoon/comic characters (Disney, Thomas the Tank Engine, Superman etc). Unable to decide which (if either) of these might be helpful for our three-year-old boy, we decided to buy both and try them out. This is what we found.
The V.Smile is slightly more expensive (AU$119 for the console, plus AU$40 per software cartridge). It seems like the better machine in a lot of respects. There is a much wider range of software (about 30 cartridges available), catering from 3-to-5-year-olds up to 6-to-8-year-olds. It looks better engineered: sound output can be in stereo; there is a built-in compartment for storing your cartridges; there is a microphone (which we haven't used yet); and, although battery-powered (4 x AA), you can also run it off the mains - though, somewhat annoyingly, you have to buy a separate AC adapter. The user manual leaflet is somewhat better than that of its competitor, though both are adequate and both systems were quite easy to set-up without the manual.
However, its appearance gives the game away for the V.Smile: it looks like a cartoon version of a Playstation, and the interface is joystick-based (one supplied, with the option to add a second). It is first and foremost a games console, and the software confirms this: the activities are essentially `platform games' (think Donkey Kong or Super Mario), with a fairly thin serving of word/number/pattern/colour recognition thrown in. It was readily apparent that the main entertainment lay in manoeuvring, jumping, and evading hazards, and the basics of this were beyond our three-year-old at his first sitting; in contrast, the puzzles shown (`which one is the apple?' `pick the red circle' etc) posed little or no challenge to him at all. Although he had great fun (with Daddy's help), I'm not sure he learnt anything at all in an hour's test run.
The Clickstart got off to a poorer start, despite being a bit cheaper (AU$98 for the console, and AU$31.50 per cartridge). For openers, it's packaged in that annoying wire-and-sticky-tape fashion that takes at least half-an-hour to get out of the box and generally requires destroying a substantial amount of the packaging. There seem to be only six software cartridges available, aiming up to 6-year-olds. It does have the big advantage of being cordless, relying on an infra-red transmitter rather like your remote. We thought this might be a problem for our projector (being behind the child, as opposed to a TV screen in front of them), but it proved to be no problem at all unless someone stood in front of the IR receiver - presumably the IR signal is reflected from the wall. However, this does also mean that there are two components each requiring batteries (4 x AA and 4 x C), with no option for an AC adapter.
But - and it's a big but - the Clickstart is quite clearly based on a computer, not a games console. The interface is a QWERTY keyboard, with a simple one-button mouse; it can register different `users', if you have more than one child; and the home screen is a simplistic `point-and-click' GUI. A cute puppy called Scout is your guide to the system (and our boy LOVES puppies). The built-in games are more varied in format, and richer in content, than those of the V.Smile; they focus on developing both conceptual skills (numbers, letters, shapes, colours etc) and interface skills (how to use a keyboard and mouse). Even with no keyboard skills at all, our three-year-old could still have a grand time pressing random keys to collect alphabetical fruit or bring up phonetic-linked pictures. But by the end of an hour or so, he was starting to recognise individual digits (`press the 8 key'), and was getting the hang of the mouse. The cartridge games we tried were somewhat more `platform'-like, but with less emphasis on tricky manoeuvring and more emphasis on picking the right shape/number/colour, and some counting. The cartridge graphics seem to have come from the 1980s, but our three-year-old could recognise Buzz and Woody and Emperor Zurg and that was good enough for him! And whereas the V.Smile cartridges are each pitched at a specific age range, the Clickstart games and cartridges each contain different levels for different age groups - making up to some degree for the fact that there are fewer of them.
So my vote goes to the Clickstart, simply because it aims to be an educational toy computer rather than an educational games console; and (on the basis of a short test run), it actually seems to achieve some education. On the other hand, for an older child who's already hooked on video games, the V.Smile probably stands a better chance of getting their attention, and perhaps keeping it with the older-age-group cartridges and two-player options. I'm still not convinced that either of these systems is really the best way to teach children their numbers and letters; and I realise that nothing will take the place of hours of input from an enthusiastic adult. But I'd much rather see my toddler having fun with a keyboard than a joystick, particularly if that's going to set any sort of pattern for the future.

Vtech - Baby's Learning Laptop Review

Vtech - Baby's Learning Laptop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As our 15 months old has taken a keen interest to my laptop, we felt this would b nice alternative. Turns out, not really, they know the difference. Still, this is a fun toy for the little ones.
Essentially this unit makes an assortment of music, sounds and interacts with keyboard input. Two volume levels are present and we find the lower setting to be perfect as it can get a bit loud on the higher setting. There are plenty of voices, sounds, and music to keep things from getting too repetitive. There is also a little mouse that-well-is shaped like a mouse, that can be moved up ,down, left ,and right with a corresponding voice stating the movement. The mouse is attached to the unit and cannot be removed so nothing can be lost or swallowed.
Durability is very good on this item with no small items that can break off or removed for consumption or chocking ( This is of primary concern for us as it should be for all).
One thing to watch out for and as another reviewer stated, is my boy closes the lid on his fingers or hand. Now for some reason after he closes the lid he places all of his 8 month old might into ensuring it is closed. So I would not walk away and leave him long with it alone as who knows how much pressure it takes for him to feel it. So far he has not injured himself and he has not cried or made any other type of commotion -yet. Just something to watch out for. I am sure if it really hurt he would stop but I am a paranoid father.
EDIT: Well, my boy finally did push too hard and hurt himself with his finger inside the lid. No damage to either finger or toy but something to look out for.
Now my boy does tend to get bored easily and this item is no different. In fact now when I open the screen and play with it with him, he just casually reaches over and closes the screen-often. I think my wife taught him that so that I would do the same with my own laptop.
The toy itself is great and though no where near the sophistication of the real thing it certainly did not cost as much or as dangerous either (he pulled the L key off my laptop keyboard).
Battery life so far is very good with the unit being used everyday for 3 weeks and no sign of weakness. This is a relief as some toys eat through batteries very quickly and things get costly over time as the good batteries are not exactly cheap. We tend to go through 10-15 batteries a week in his other items such as rockers, toys, etc..
Oh, how I envy him and his simple laptop; no investments, no news, no work emails, no etc.... just lights, music, and sound.
Our boy really does enjoy the time with this toy and though he seems now to be more fascinated with closing the lid than anything else there are times he enjoys just slamming his fist at the keyboard and looking up at the screen. Now THAT he did get from daddy! ;)
