This was a present for the grandkids. They worked at this for hours (age 4 and 6 ) and never lost interest. One word of caution: It is messy. This is probably a better outside toy where you can hose everyone and everything down.

Educational Insights Velociraptors (GeoSafari Dino Digs) Review

If your child loves dinosaurs, you *must* buy this.
I bought this for my 4-year-old son because he eats, sleeps, breathes dinosaurs. Inside a brick of clay lurks the "skeletons" of two velociraptors. The kit includs a digging/scraping tool and brush for my little paleontologist to literally dig the two skeletons out of the brick.
The booklet included in the kit is extremely well-done; it discusses dinosaurs and velocirators' living and eating habits, shows the different pieces of plastic skeleton that were buried within the clay, gives tips on identifying and how to record findings, and gives instructions for putting the pieces together to make complete skeletons.
I have to admit that the clay is very hard, and scraping takes a very long time--so we gently tap away chunks of the clay using a tack hammer and small chisel. I do most of the scraping, and he does the brushing. The brush isn't big enough, so the buyer might invest in a much bigger paintbrush (or old blush brush).
The best part is discovering yet another bone. They are exciting to find, challenging to extract, and very fun!

Educational Insights Stegosaurus (GeoSafari Dino Digs) Review

The GeoSafari kits are the more educational of the dinosaur excavation kits, providing a booklet with fun facts and projects as you excavate and assemble your dinosaur. It is also the least messy, with the bones packed in clay. Unfortunately these are the only advantages over other kits you could by. The excavation tools provided ensure that it will take a long while to get to the bones. And the bones don't snap into each other like other kits. Instead, you use wax to hold them in place. The wax is messy but is supposed to allow for movement if you want to put your dinosaur in different poses. Unfortunately what you wind up having is a skeleton that falls apart easily.
For the same type of kits I'd go with the EduScience brand.
