(More customer reviews)While I am not a chemist nor a volcano expert, I am a certified teacher. This kit provided hours and hours of quality time for my 4 year old, my six year old and myself. We measured ingredients, mixed solutions, made predictions, learned vocabulary, and discussed results. Can you think of many toys that can offer all of that? I thought the booklet that contained instructions was well-sequenced, with simple experiments followed by complex ones and with a helpful parent script. There were two drawbacks: the activities required direct parent involvement and sometimes a 2 hour wait time was required for "reactions" to happen

After a few of the kids became so frustrated with the scope they gave up, I and 6 other adults attempted to make some use out of it. I even looked at things like bee wings, cricket legs, my mom's hair, my dog's fur, and a flower petal. The pre-made slides that came with it were pretty cool too - I liked the onion cells best. I would highly recommend this microscope for you to buy. One of the things I don't like so much about it is the cover slips for the slides you can make for yourself - I don't understand why they are round, and many of them are kind of scratched.

(More customer reviews)I bought this set for my 8-year-old brother. He wanted to dig up the dinosaur right away!
The tool included is plastic and about as sharp as a plastic butter knife, so your child should be safe, which was my main concern.
The only downside to this set is it is very dusty. Also, you put together the dinosaur with the provided wax, which is definitely an adult supervision task.

I bought this for my 4-year-old son because he eats, sleeps, breathes dinosaurs. Inside a brick of clay lurks the "skeletons" of two velociraptors. The kit includs a digging/scraping tool and brush for my little paleontologist to literally dig the two skeletons out of the brick.
The booklet included in the kit is extremely well-done; it discusses dinosaurs and velocirators' living and eating habits, shows the different pieces of plastic skeleton that were buried within the clay, gives tips on identifying and how to record findings, and gives instructions for putting the pieces together to make complete skeletons.
I have to admit that the clay is very hard, and scraping takes a very long time--so we gently tap away chunks of the clay using a tack hammer and small chisel. I do most of the scraping, and he does the brushing. The brush isn't big enough, so the buyer might invest in a much bigger paintbrush (or old blush brush).
The best part is discovering yet another bone. They are exciting to find, challenging to extract, and very fun!

(More customer reviews)I agree with the previous reviewer. The instructions are not easy at all to follow. The color in the instructions don't match the colors of the actual pieces. Also they have one picture for about 10 steps. It makes it very difficult and time consuming to follow.
I would not recommend this for anyone under 12 years old, and in fact I would not recommend this for anyone. I helped my son, but I didn't have much fun. When we finally did get the catapult put together, it was pathetic. It shot a cog about 3 feet. It is possible that I didn't put it together correctly, but with the sad state of the instructions, I will never know.
The pieces seemed durable enough, though a few did suffer from stress fatigue, and it would seem likely that they would not last more than a few times of setting up the catapult.
This is a toy that seemed to have a lot of potential, but in the end was not worth the money. Lego kits are more fun even if they cost more. For the time you have to put into it for the result you get this is definitely not worth your money or time.

(More customer reviews)I was real disappointed with this product. I usually like toys that allow children to grow things and I felt this would be a real good learning experience. However....out of the 20+ seeds that we tried planting, only 2 actually sprouted. The directions say to plant them 1/4 inch from the viewing window. We did this the first time and when it sprouted, we were unable to see the root! I recommend planting the seeds right next to the viewing window and planting a few more than the 3-4 seeds per hole that they say in the instructions. (Or try a different product...The Wee Enchanted Garden is Great!)

Children's Volcano Science Kit: your very own volcano will really erupt with bubbly, fizzy lava. Review

(More customer reviews)This kit is very user friendly and very child friendly. We mixed the papier mache and had the volcano made in under 5 minutes. It dried within 2 days and the "explosion" went off without a hitch. There is a nice information booklet, too. It's all good but I don't think worth the price. The lava foams and creeps over the side. Nothing dramatic (like the mentos in a bottle of pop experiment which is 10 feet high and must be done outside) but still good.
You could make your own papier mache, and use a rounded tsp. baking powder and pour in enough vinegar for it to foam up and over the edge, get volcano info on line and spend next to nothing.
But if you're looking to give a gift in a nice box with slick pictures, then it's fine. If you just want to make a volcano for a science project, I'd say save your money and do your own. The only piece you'd need to find is some sort of vial that's cylindrical and open at the top to put the baking powder in.

(More customer reviews)This is a pretty good book for teaching some basics of anatomy to young children. It helps them to get a simple understanding of some of the major systems of the body, what they look like, and how they fit together. My son especially enjoys examining the skeleton model (we call him "Mr. Bones"), and he has learned alot simply by being able to play with it and ask questions. The book is not as detailed as I had thought. I thought the skin would "peel" away to reveal the muscles, which would "peel" away to reveal the internal organs, and then the skeleton. However, only the skin, internal organs, skeleton and the major blood vessels are shown. Each page includes interesting facts and information about the human body. The book is very durable. The skeleton sometimes pops apart, but goes back together easily.
