Scientific Explorer Scientific Explorer's Fizzy Foamy Science Kit of Safe Chemical Reactions Review

Scientific Explorer Scientific Explorer's Fizzy Foamy Science Kit of Safe Chemical Reactions
Average Reviews:

As a scientist mom you'd think I could easily get baking soda and vinegar from the kitchen and do these experiments without a stupid kit.
However I found that having specific "equipment" (test tubes) and "materials" engaged the interest of my kids. And most importantly, step by step suggestions for what experiments to do and what to say about them, helped me make this both interesting and educational for my kids.
My kids (3 and 4) went wild testing everything in the fridge to see if it contains acid (and thus if it would make baking soda fizz); they liked that they could guess from sourness and then test their predictions.
Ever since then my kids keep pestering me to do more chemistry. That's pretty significant. They make up (often quite wrong) theories about why different liquids fizz or mix the way they do. They got thinking about the fact that this is a question that can be asked, or that demands an explanation. To me that is a huge educational value.
Overall you could easily do the same things with kitchen materials and a well designed plan, but the kit makes it easy.

Scientific Explorer's My 1St Science Kit - The Science of Color Review

Scientific Explorer's My 1St Science Kit - The Science of Color
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I agree with all the reviews here - the good AND the bad. The set is cheap, chintzy, and NOT worth the money for the materials. The magnifying glass is...well, I wouldn't even call it cheap plastic. Just impossible to see anything through it. The droppers are cheap and I am sure will not hold up to repeated use. The plastic cups are the kind they use to give you 2 pills in the hospital - disposable plastic.
The entire kit is based solely on color mixing using Crayola tub tints! I almost had a fit - I have a jar of 50 of them in the bathroom! Color mixing is all you get here.
That being said - my 4 1/2 year old loved it. Felt like a real scientist with her dropper and what-not. So, was it worth the twenty dollars? Not from a materials stand point. But for watching my daughter learn and discover and become jazzed about experiments even more than she was (if that's possible), then yes, it was worth it.
It was definitely worth Mom learning a lesson on buying good quality materials and borrowing experiment idea books from the library!

Scientific Explorer's Mind Blowing Science Kit for Young Scientists Review

Scientific Explorer's Mind Blowing Science Kit for Young Scientists

While I am not a chemist nor a volcano expert, I am a certified teacher. This kit provided hours and hours of quality time for my 4 year old, my six year old and myself. We measured ingredients, mixed solutions, made predictions, learned vocabulary, and discussed results. Can you think of many toys that can offer all of that? I thought the booklet that contained instructions was well-sequenced, with simple experiments followed by complex ones and with a helpful parent script. There were two drawbacks: the activities required direct parent involvement and sometimes a 2 hour wait time was required for "reactions" to happen

GeoSafari MagniScope Review

GeoSafari MagniScope
Average Reviews:

I purchased the toy for my step-son's 7 year birthday. After a few of the kids became so frustrated with the scope they gave up, I and 6 other adults attempted to make some use out of it. The specimen holder constantly fell off, the aquarium dripped and lost all it's water, and no-one could it to focus.

This was a present for the grandkids. They worked at this for hours (age 4 and 6 ) and never lost interest. One word of caution: It is messy. This is probably a better outside toy where you can hose everyone and everything down.

Educational Insights GeoSafari Prospector's Mystery Rock Review

Educational Insights GeoSafari Prospector's Mystery Rock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My husband and I got this for our 7 year old daughter as a holiday gift in December 2003. We love it because long after the other holiday gifts have been forgotten about, this one still brings our daughter excitement. She just found the last gem this month (10 months later!). This is a messy gift - when we use it, we lay down newspaper and wear aprons, but nothing ever stained. Looking for the gems does require patience, but I liked that about this gift/toy because it took patience and perseverance in order to obtain the prize - most toys these days are instant gratification. We highly recommend this item.

Educational Insights Velociraptors (GeoSafari Dino Digs) Review

Educational Insights Velociraptors (GeoSafari Dino Digs)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If your child loves dinosaurs, you *must* buy this.
I bought this for my 4-year-old son because he eats, sleeps, breathes dinosaurs. Inside a brick of clay lurks the "skeletons" of two velociraptors. The kit includs a digging/scraping tool and brush for my little paleontologist to literally dig the two skeletons out of the brick.
The booklet included in the kit is extremely well-done; it discusses dinosaurs and velocirators' living and eating habits, shows the different pieces of plastic skeleton that were buried within the clay, gives tips on identifying and how to record findings, and gives instructions for putting the pieces together to make complete skeletons.
I have to admit that the clay is very hard, and scraping takes a very long time--so we gently tap away chunks of the clay using a tack hammer and small chisel. I do most of the scraping, and he does the brushing. The brush isn't big enough, so the buyer might invest in a much bigger paintbrush (or old blush brush).
The best part is discovering yet another bone. They are exciting to find, challenging to extract, and very fun!

Educational Insights Stegosaurus (GeoSafari Dino Digs) Review

Educational Insights Stegosaurus (GeoSafari Dino Digs)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The GeoSafari kits are the more educational of the dinosaur excavation kits, providing a booklet with fun facts and projects as you excavate and assemble your dinosaur. It is also the least messy, with the bones packed in clay. Unfortunately these are the only advantages over other kits you could by. The excavation tools provided ensure that it will take a long while to get to the bones. And the bones don't snap into each other like other kits. Instead, you use wax to hold them in place. The wax is messy but is supposed to allow for movement if you want to put your dinosaur in different poses. Unfortunately what you wind up having is a skeleton that falls apart easily.
For the same type of kits I'd go with the EduScience brand.

Elmer's Education Diego My First Rock Collecting Kit Review

Elmer's Education Diego My First Rock Collecting Kit
Average Reviews:

I would not buy this product again. We are missing one of the rocks. I am not even sure which one because although there are plenty of photos on the box and on the enclosed brochure, none of the photos are labeled with the rock names as a guide. The collecting case is too small to actually fit any of the rocks in. This item is going to be returned!
