(More customer reviews)For my almost 3 year old, I wanted a toy that would last for a while. This is perfect because she can use it now and for the next year or two at least. After that, it is always a loved toy whoever plays with it.
I found the others available to be too simple and limited in their use.
Don't be fooled by the colors on the maze. This is a solid product and is exceptional in every way. I haven't tried it while driving in the car, but I will see if it's good for long rides as well while in the carseat.
At home otherwise, it's perfect to play with mommy or another child alongside (two wands)

Melissa & Doug Alphabet Train Floor Puzzle Review

(More customer reviews)Typical of this manufacturer, the graphics are high quality and the cardboard is thick and durable.
The cuts on the puzzle are divided so that one piece is one train car. (Other puzzles by other manufacturers can be put together without ever knowing or dealing with the alphabet.) The only way to construct this puzzle is to know the proper order of the English alphabet and attach them in that manner. Each piece contains both the upper and lower case letter and an illustration to go along with that letter.
My son began playing with this when he was three and did not yet know the letters by sight. He did know the alphabet song. I found the way to play this with the least frustration and the most educational value is for me to play alongside him. I let him piece them together until he asks for help (before he is angry). We sing the alphabet song together to find the next letter in the alphabet. If he doesn't know it by sight he asks for help and I give phonetic clues such as "G makes a sound like "gg", what do you see that starts off like that sound" at which point he finds the goldfish. One complaint though is that the goldfish is sometimes mistaken for just a fish and the F. I wish something more blatantly "g" was chosen for that one. We progress in this manner until it is done. I feel this has helped him learn the letters by their sight.
The appeal for my son was that this is a train related toy. Learning the alphabet was a byproduct that he was not aware was actually my key motive in buying this.
I also appreciate both upper and lower case letters being shown as sometimes alphabet toys and activities use just one or the other.
If you like this type of learning activity I'd also suggest the numbers puzzle by this same manufacturer to help learn the numbers by sight.

I wanted something that would be appropriate for his age (not all metal) but something that wasn't entirely rubber. This is a great dump truck. It is very durable. Looks great. Green Toys Sand Play Set Review

(More customer reviews)We found these and got them 2 weeks before a vacation. Great price to begin with. This set is bullet proof. The gauge of the plastic is very thick. These will not crack like most if not all other play sets. The rake tines will give slightly but won't snap or crack. The shovel is stiff for digging. Plus they have a little nub for thumbs to help push or pull. The bucket is VERY sturdy. The castle is equally strong. We had loads of fun using this on the beach. Other children on the beach wanted to play with them. Reluctantly my girls let them ;). Cust service from Green Toys equally great. We lost the rake to the Atlantic, we got home and emailed Green Toys on how to buy a new one. They send a replacement free of charge and some little extras.
You will not be disappointed with this set, based on it construction, if you don't lose a piece or two. It will last you for a long, long time.UPDATE 5/2010
Just wanted to update this review. My girls are 3 years older and so is their play set. They are scratched up like any producted used in sand. BUT the color has not faded and NOT one crack any where. Even the rope used for the bucket is good to go. Now we left them out two winters and garaged the other one. BUT if not for the scratches the look good as new.

Large Alphabet Blocks by Review

(More customer reviews)There seem to be several toys of this nature with varying size blocks. Some of them are really small too and the pictures are somewhat deceptive in depicting the size. This toy, though it says large blocks, is composed of 48 one and three-fourth inch wooden cubes. The cubes are robustly built and light. Box is solidly built. My child likes the cubes and also uses the box as a stepping stool sometimes. I think it will last a long time. I'm satisfied with this purchase.

(More customer reviews)First of all, the only reason I give the Doll Center a 3 star review is because my daughter loves it. Upon opening the box you are greeted by a jumbled mess of plastic. Not too bad, except every piece is stuck to the plastic tree mold from hell. Is there any way to break the parts off this tree without leaving the little nub that somehow manages to scratch you every time? Besides the one-gazillion parts, do you think the plastic pieces could be of a little better quality? Maybe the instructions could be a little more...user friendly, for us Dads that are plastic toy assembly challenged. Bottom line, your child will enjoy this but, parents, be ready to be frustrated.

American Plastic Toy My Very Own 26 Piece Tea Cart Set Review

(More customer reviews)I was pretty disappointed in this toy when I opened the box. All the pieces were attached to plastic frames which I'm sure makes it much faster and easier for the manufacturer to create, but left me with lots of sharp and pointy edges, even using scissors as recommended in the instructions. I actually found that stressing the plastic and twisting them out left less dangerous edges.
I found the assembly of the tea set to be annoying and I ended up with several small scratches on my hands from the sharp edges as well. It took me about an hour to remove the pieces from the plastic frames and put the 8 screws in. I have honestly built IKEA items in less time.
Once it was assembled it, my girls seemed to enjoy playing with it. I'm definitely nervous about the sharp edges everywhere (not just where it was attached to the frame). I will have to take some sandpaper or a dremel to them to grind them down which will take another 15 minutes or so.
Pros:
It is a tea cart.
The kids seem to like it.
Cons:
Sharp plastic everywhere
Pain to put together
Overall, I would have given it 1 *, but given that the kids seem to like it, a bonus * for 2 *.

Kid Go Car - Aqua Blue Review

(More customer reviews)I don't know if I got a lemon, but the wheels were so stiff that the toy doesn't really roll (even with some serious pushing) so it just doesn't work as a car. Paper weight, maybe. But, since I live indoors and don't have a problem with wind blowing papers around, I returned it.
(It's so cute, though, I might try ordering it again in the hopes that the next one will actually work as a car.)
