Melissa & Doug 60-Piece Standard Unit Blocks Review

Melissa and Doug 60-Piece Standard Unit Blocks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There is one reviewer here who didn't like these blocks. (I'm guessing that reviewer has other, more expensive, unit blocks.) Please allow me to address the points raised by that reviewer.
"The Weight": Some children can lift 15 pounds (like my 3-year-old), and some can't. Know your child, and supervise the little ones when moving the full box of blocks. Common sense, really. Not a problem. Usually, my kids leave the box on the floor and just push it across the carpet.
We have had one box split near the bottom at one end. A little wood glue and an overnight clamping session, and it was good to go. The dovetail joints are plenty strong for the job, even if there might be weak points in the wood. For the first while, my kids' favorite piece was the box (it was a boat, a bed, a car, etc.), so I'm not surprised that it had a problem.
"The Smell": yes, these blocks to have a slight odor to them when the package is first opened. It's the finish they use, and it's not strong at all. I would guess it's some type of natural oil. (Tung, linseed, or something similar.) I'm highly sensitive to chemicals and other odors (headaches and allergic reactions), and this didn't bother me at all. It dissipated quickly, and is completely unnoticeable after a short while. I especially like the finish M&D use on these blocks because it's not readily apparent, and yet it has kept the wood smooth. Even blocks that sneaked (under their own power, I'm sure ;o) into the bathtub have dried very well. The grain of the wood raised slightly, but smoothed back down nicely with play, and never splintered at all. The feel of these blocks is great, too. Smooth and pleasant to touch, but with enough texture to make them easy to manipulate for small hands.
"Not True Standard Unit Blocks": Um, yes, they are. The larger triangles are the size of two of the smaller triangles, two of which equal half of the standard unit block (1-1/2" x 2" x 5"). The hypotenuse of the large triangle is also the same length as the standard unit block (5"). The large triangles use variations of the same "unit" all the other blocks do. Just because HABA or other companies don't have a block that size doesn't mean it can't be done. Each and every block in this set shares the same width, as well as one other dimension (whether that second dimension is exactly the same as the first, or is a multiple of it).
And those little quarter circles are some of my kids' favorites. They're also great for helping to teach fractions, as are the half circles. Put 'em on their rounded edges on top of a little block, and you've got a nifty sailboat, to boot. Or on top of a pillar, and you've got a minaret spire. They're great.
"Not hardwood": Rubberwood is a hardwood. Not all hardwoods are as heavy as cherry or oak. Can you imagine how heavy this box would be if the blocks were made from a heavier hardwood? Ay! No thanks. It's heavy enough as it is.
I love it that the Rubberwood is tough as well as light. Along with the very tight, straight grain and smooth feel, my kids have abused these blocks for nearly four years now, and they're still looking great. (We now own two sets.)
To sum up: We love love love these blocks. If you have more than one child (or one very imaginative and creative child), you would do well to purchase two sets. (And you're still paying less for two sets than you would be buying 60 unit blocks from other companies.)
Cheap? No way.
An excellent value? Definitely!

Natural Wood Blocks by Maxim, 150 pcs Review

Natural Wood Blocks by Maxim, 150 pcs

These blocks are a lot smaller than they appear in the picture. I thought they'd be at least double the size that they are. Nevertheless, my kids will enjoy them....even if they cost more than they should. Also, be aware that these blocks come in a regular cardboard box with "Made In China" stamped on the sides, along with a barcode. It's definitely not packaged for gift giving.

BRIO Natural Blocks - 50 pcs Review

BRIO Natural Blocks - 50 pcs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These look like the standard wooden blocks we all grew up with in the online picture, but they are not. These are in fact a miniature version of our old standard blocks - maybe a quarter of the size. Perfect for losing all over the house, and not at all what I had in mind for my little boy. I see now in the online picture that there are no children in the picture with the blocks so that one might be tipped off to the size. If you are looking for little blocks, that's fine, but if you are expecting the old familiar basic chunky wooden blocks, look elsewhere.

Haba Pyramid Review

Haba Pyramid
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My sons are into building things - legos, standard unit blocks and anything they can get their hands on. They do like this set and didn't even need to look at the instructions to build the outside. Because of the odd dimensions of these Haba blocks, they cannot be integrated into other structures and thus put a limit of creativity. If the dimensions are consistent with standard unit blocks, they will get taken out more often to play. Also, this set has just enough blocks to make the pyramid in the picture, so there is no way to close the pyramid's "door". Could be better, but this is the only pyramid blocks we have found...

Melissa & Doug Deluxe 50-piece Wooden ABC/123 Blocks Set Review

Melissa and Doug Deluxe 50-piece Wooden ABC/123 Blocks Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although the recommended age is 2 years, I confirmed with the manufacturer that this age recommendation is for the child's interest/educational sake and not safety related. My ten month old loved the blocks and immediately bagan examining each one, as well as tasting them as everything goes in her month at this age. Within minutes, I noticed she had something in her mouth that she was chewing on. The blocks are made from such soft wood that with a little saliva she was able to scrape wood (and ink) off with her teeth! The ink on the side of the block was already smearing with a little saliva, and as I said she was able to scrape off the wood-- enough to chew on! Needless to say, the toy was taken away from her (much to her dismay). I was very disappointed with the quality of this classic styled old fashioned toy.

Melissa & Doug Castle Blocks Review

Melissa and Doug Castle Blocks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These were so popular in a group of five cousins, ages 2 to 5, that they caused squabbles over who got to use them, while most of the rest of the many new presents sat neglected! They are well made, seem quite durable, and a are nice change of pace from the usual plain wooden blocks. I generally subscribe to the argument that plainer toys encourage more imaginative play, but a little color is nice to add sometimes, and they encourage more imagination, I would say, than a Playmobil or Lego castle set, where the pieces are more detailed and therefore leave less to the imagination. A variety of toys could play within a castle built from this set - dollhouse dolls, Lego or Duplo or Playmobil people, etc. Recommended by this mom of 3!

Haba Come with Us - Prepositions Review

Haba Come with Us - Prepositions
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I really like the idea of this book. However, it could be improved on. The text should be a little simpler with the text clearly emphasizing the preposition. Also, sometimes when you put the magnet on the page, it will stick to the correct place, but if you move the monkey a little it will also stick to an incorrect place. Overall, Not something I would recommend.

Melissa & Doug 100 Piece Wood Blocks Set Review

Melissa and Doug 100 Piece Wood Blocks Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought two boxes of these blocks for my son when he was two because blocks are a wonderful open ended toy. The blocks were well made and the paint never chipped on ours. Although the product was as described I would not buy them again.
I found these to be so small it took a lot of patience and time to build larger structures. My son's creations would take a while to build, then fall over easily. My son and I had a few opportunities to play with larger blocks and it was so much fun to assemble huge, more stable towers, quickly. I gave all our little blocks away and bought the Melissa and Doug set of 60. We now have a daughter who is almost one and both children use them daily in different ways. If I could do it all over again I would have saved money and began with the set of 60. We are considering a second set of the larger blocks since they are so much fun and well worth the money. [...]

If you have nothing else buildy or stacky in your house, you might like these. They are very pretty to look at. But I opened the box and found myself thinking I paid $40 for this??? There's just not a lot to them. They're also very shiny and slippery and as an adult even I found them cumbersome to attempt to stack. Not worth it - these are going back.

Maxim Natural Wood Blocks, 100-Pieces Review

Maxim Natural Wood Blocks, 100-Pieces

These are nice blocks with a few different shapes but I personally would not buy them again for the price I paid. I saw 100 count blocks for $24 and thought, "What a steal." When I received the box I couldn't believe that 100 pieces of anything could fit in it. If I would have seen them at a store I would not have paid that much for them. You could buy a dowel and a block of wood and cut out these shapes for much cheaper.

200-Piece Wood Block Set with Tote Review

200-Piece Wood Block Set with Tote
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After reading reviews of other available block sets we were a little concerned about what we'd find when this one came to us, since there were no sizes or dimensions listed, but they turned out to be just what my children had hoped for. My budding architects and city planners have used the blocks delightedly and they are rarely NOT in use, but (theoretically, at least) the canvas tote bag is a plus for storage as well. We're very happy with the purchase.

Large Alphabet Blocks by Review

Large Alphabet Blocks by

There seem to be several toys of this nature with varying size blocks. Some of them are really small too and the pictures are somewhat deceptive in depicting the size. This toy, though it says large blocks, is composed of 48 one and three-fourth inch wooden cubes. The cubes are robustly built and light. Box is solidly built. My child likes the cubes and also uses the box as a stepping stool sometimes. I think it will last a long time. I'm satisfied with this purchase.

Plan Toy 50-Unit Blocks Set Review

Plan Toy 50-Unit Blocks Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought these blocks for my two preschool children 3 years ago. Unit blocks are a wonderful way to explore early math concepts because they are related in size. Therefore they stack and balance very well. This particular set has a long thin piece that is excellent for creating bases and roofs. This piece doesn't exist in other sets I have looked at. The only comment I have is that they are made of rubber wood so they get little dents in them. They do not splinter or cause a safety issue. Enjoy!!

Melissa & Doug Deluxe Jumbo Cardboard Blocks Review

Melissa and Doug Deluxe Jumbo Cardboard Blocks
Average Reviews:

I bought this for my daughter's fourth birthday because I remembered similar big red blocks from my own kindergarten years. It has been her favorite present. She has built towers, beds for her stuffed animals, hurdles, set up a restaurant table and chairs for her dolls, and more. It's a classic toy, great for creative play.
I do wish it had more of the big red blocks; the vast majority are the small yellow ones. And you do have to assemble the blocks, which is not too difficult if you have two people to do it. It really takes more than two hands.

This 40-piece set takes the blah out of blocks, especially for kids who create best with lots of pieces, lots of color, and lots of space. A staple item in many preschools, this set can spark endless imaginative play as children build large, life-size structures. Kids will find plenty of ways to construct forts, bridges, walls, chairs, and more with the easy to assemble pieces. Three different size blocks offer a strong building foundation as well as a starting point for kids to conceptualize math (one large red block is the same size as two medium blue blocks or four small yellow blocks, adding blocks, counting blocks, etc.). The blocks also help develop large motor skills and teamwork.

Made from heavy grade cardboard, these blocks are lightweight enough for small architects to lift and connect, but strong enough to support those same builders standing or sitting on them. Kids with a knack for construction and creative play will be enraptured by these bright red, yellow, and blue blocks for hours. The 40-piece set is made up of eight large red blocks (12" x 6" x 3"), eight medium blue blocks (6" x 6" x 3"), and 24 small yellow blocks (6" x 3" x 3").
