(More customer reviews)This toy is not worth the money! I remember playing this game with one of my brothers when I was little, and we always had a good time. I was hoping to replicate the experience for my children; unfortunately, this game has been brought back in a junky, poor quality version. The hippos have to be removed from the game board with their necks extended and locked into place in order to put the game away in the box. My kids (6&4) have a hard time putting it together or putting it away by themselves (huge minus in my book!). The hippos sometimes become detached from the game during play. Their necks *frequently* get stuck in the extended position, necessitating stopping the game so that it can get fixed. The marbles are cheap, hollow plastic rather than the heavier marbles I remember from my childhood. The stickers don't stay on the hippos very well, so none of our hippos have eyes anymore. Even the box itself is incredibly flimsy if you hope to use it as a storage box for the game. Don't waste your money! Our game is sitting in the donation bin waiting to be taken to charity!

(More customer reviews)We ordered Chutes and Ladders for our four year old. He enjoys the game, but there are a few things that we don't like.
1.The child needs to be able to visually recognize the numbers 1-100, so that they know where to move. If your child, like ours, can't do this yet it becomes frustrating with having always to tell them where to move. It feels like you are playing for them. So, we play lots more Candy Land that Chutes and Ladders. So, this game probably isn't good for preschool children - unless you are willing to give them considerable help (which means no games played among just the children themselves).
2.The game pieces are made of cardboard that fits into little plastic stands. After several times of putting the cardboard into the stand the cardboad becomes compressed and will no longer stay in the stand. So, you will need to try to leave the stands on all the time, or you'll have to glue the pieces into the stands. Considering how classic a game this is and that families will play it for generations and hand it down, it would have been nice if they could have come up with better pieces (like the nice plastic pieces in Candy Land's anniversary edition).
3.In the last row of game play there are three chutes with only a couple of spaces separating them, which makes it VERY difficult for anyone to win and the game to be over. This gets annoying after a while and frustrating to little people.
So, we like this game, but it isn't our favorite. Be aware of your child's ability to recognize numbers and handle game frustration.

Tomy Mr. Mouth Game Review

(More customer reviews)This toy is a lot of fun if you can get the hang of it. For kids who can't get the timing down, it can be incredibly frustrating.
The head spins around and opens and quickly snaps shut as it goes by each hand.
I wish there was an option to slow down the speed because I find it very difficult for young kids to get the pieces in the mouth.

Don't Break the Ice Review

(More customer reviews)Games for small children are notoriously hard to come by. "Don't Break the Ice" is one of the few available and a classic in its own right.
My young son loves this game and we play all sorts of variations including moving the main ice piece that holds the bear to different places so we can experiment with the "physics" of the game. (So there is a true educational element.) We also try to put the ice pieces back in the frame using different patterns of insertion. This helps kill the time factor in getting the game pieces ready to play.
With its minimum of rules anyone can pick this game up in a minute. It's fun and can be played by "kids" of all ages. Given its low price, it's a no miss. Even if little children get more fun out of making the bear fall than not, so what? Think of it as a more versatile "hammer & peg bench" toy.
There are some durability issues. If one of the tabs that hold the ice breaks, you are out of luck. The frame consists of two pieces that slide together and the connection is prone to breakage. Still, at this price point it's a lot easier to replace than many of the fragile toys that cost far more. In fact you could buy every toy in the Milton Bradley "Cootie" line and still be under the cost of just one other plastic toy.
A good bet for a good price.

My son is four and he does a pretty good job following the directions.. the only befuddling part is a long standing function of chutes and ladders, moving back and forth (changing directions at each level) across the board. It confuses my poor little sprout every time, especially if he goes up a ladder and is suddenly going the same way he was before instead of the opposite, like he would if he hadn't hit a ladder. lol. In any event, it's super and the characters are adorable and the board is adorable.

(More customer reviews)I bought this for Christmas for my three children ages 4 (twins) and 18 mos. Although the younger child doesn't really get the games we play with it, the older ones do and we all have a great time. My goal was to get them to be active during the winter (less TV time), and this works for about 30 minutes. I only wish we had a bigger house so I could have gotten the bigger parachute. I can't wait to play with it outside when it gets warm.

(More customer reviews)...there are several good reasons why "Candy Land" is the first board game children learn to play:
First, the game does not require children know how to read. They do not even need to know their numbers as they do in "Chutes and Ladders." Movement is based on a child being able to recognize colors and symbols. What could be easier than that?
Second, the game is based on luck (or chance or divine intervention or however you want to characterize it), which means it is a great equalizer. This is a game where a kid has the same chance of winning as their parents, older siblings, grandparents, babysitters or whoever. Children are not going to be interested in playing a game they cannot win, which is why "Candy Land" is where they begin instead of "Monopoly" or "Trivial Pursuit."
Third, the game teaches the basic skills of board games. The hardest lesson kid have to learn with this game is to...take turns. Yes, this might be one of the first times in their young lives when kids are confronted with the regiment of structure that will afflict them the rest of their lives. But from board games like "Candy Land" to sports like baseball, structure and rules are a basic consideration. Strategy and tactics come later, but learning to take turns comes first (and I could argue is a basic lesson in civil behavior).
Therefore, I would respectfully submit that "Candy Land" remains the ideal choice for the first board game you play with your children. Just pick a card, move to the appropriate square, and proceed to have a great life.

(More customer reviews)With 72 cards (36 pairs)I think this is a little more than most 3 year olds can remember. I suggest using only part of the cards and gradually increasing the number of cards as the child gets older--otherwise, they may become frustrated and give up. I agree with the reviewer who suggested that the cards should be laminated. I am not sure how long they will hold up if used much. The pictures are all familiar objects that preschoolers will readily identify, and it's a great game for spending time together.
Update February 17,2009: Yesterday we had this game out again. My 5 year old grandson and I enjoyed playing the game several times and I must admit we make our own rules as we play and I think everyone should, taking into consideration the child's ability as well as the grandparent's. I want to mention that the cards have held up well even after all these years without being laminated. Buy it and have fun!

Lucky Ducks Review

(More customer reviews)The age on the box is 3 & up, but 2 yr olds also have lots of fun just playing with the ducks. The new quacking sounds are much better (softer) than the old one. The whole unit is smaller and fits into the box nicely. It uses 2 c size batteries, one less than the old one.
The Color matching is the same but now the ducks also have shapes to match too!
It's a classic fun game made better than ever!
