Fisher-Price GeoTrax Lift & Load Construction Co. Review

Fisher-Price GeoTrax Lift and Load Construction Co.
Average Reviews:

My 5 year old just received this today and we love it. You can do a lot with it, and I think he and his brother will be playing with it for awhile. Looks well made. Comes with a dump truck and driver - I like that it can be a stand-alone toy, as in you don't have to have a bunch of other GeoTrax stuff to play with it.
Update: 6 months later and still going strong. The boys still play with it (they love loading things, and any vehicle-related toy they can manipulate and interact with, so this fits the bill) and it's held up with no problems whatsoever. A great addition to the deservedly popular GeoTrax line.

GeoTrax Rail & Road System - Rocky Falls Tunnel Review

GeoTrax Rail and Road System - Rocky Falls Tunnel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The entire line of GeoTrax Road 'n' Rail toys is great for kids ages 2 1/2 and up. They promote imaginative play and creative design, they're attractive and solidly-constructed, etc. However, while some of the add-ons are better conceived than others, the Rocky Falls Tunnel is among the best.
The set consists of a hard plastic arched junction and two flexible fabric lengths of tunnel. These tunnel pieces are detachable so that they can be used separately or as part of this set. However, when they're not attached to the main base, it looks unfinished, i.e. you can definitely tell that pieces have been removed. Also, when using the fabric tunnel pieces in any capacity, they're very picky about curves - the train will oftentimes get stuck in the tunnel if it's not used on a straight section of track. So, it's best use is with a T-intersection in the middle and straight tracks coming out of all sides. The set unfortunately includes no track pieces.
The set's operation is controlled by the train passing through, but not in the traditional GeoMotion way. When the train passes through, it trips a light sensor under the archway which triggers the water wheel as well as some cool sound effects. The sounds include both train and nature effects; the set randomly selects which sounds to play with each pass-through. The set also occasionally throws out a random nature sound even when the train isn't coming through, which adds fun atmosphere to the overall landscape. The sounds are well-recorded and volume is just right.
When completely assembled, the set is on the large side (just shy of the roundhouse or Mile High Mountain base for comparison), so plan on your GeoTrax layout growing when you add the Falls. Overall, this add-on is a lot of fun and the versatility that it offers makes it a great addition to anyone's GeoTrax collection.
PROS
* Motion-sensor trigger for sounds and actions works very well
* Sound effects are fun and pleasant
* The detachable fabric tunnel pieces also fit into each other for use elsewhereCONS
* Flexible fabric tunnels are picky when used with curved tracks
* When the fabric tunnels are removed, the main piece looks unfinished - why not include hard plastic caps that look like the rocks?

Now kids can add a flexible tunnel to their GeoTrax Railway, along with a working water wheel! Add an RC train to Rocky Falls Tunnel, and through the magic of GeoMotion, the water wheel turns and sound effects (nature sounds, train sounds and water sounds) happen! (You can also activate the water wheel by hand.)The tunnel is made of expandable fabric, so you can set it up different ways. It can cover 6" straight track, 6" curved track and 9" curved track. Includes mountain tunnel with working water wheel, two expandable fabric tunnels (expand up to 28") and two railroad crossing gates (RC train sold separately). Requires 3 "AA" (LR6) batteries (not included).

BRIO Magnetic Stacking Train Review

BRIO Magnetic Stacking Train
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I thought it would be cool to teach our little boy about how magnets work with this train, however it's not as easy to get the magnets to stick to the base of the train as one would think. There is only one side of each of the pieces that attaches magnetically to the train's base. So that means you have to try up to 6 surfaces to find the "sticky" surface. Seems like a simple thing but it's kind of annoying. Wouldn't have bought this had I known this.

GeoTrax Working Town Train Railway Playset Review

GeoTrax Working Town Train Railway Playset
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love this train set! A friend gave this to our two year old son for Christmas and out of several different train sets, this has turned out to be by far the best. It is the most interesting and easiest to use, and with the very easy-to-use remote control and cool sounds it maintains interest for all ages.
Ours has had 9 months of not-so-gentle use and is still going strong. The batteries have only been replaced twice (the second time was just last week) and it's had plenty of time in the toybox with batteries still in there (we hear the trains beep once in a while as they get jostled, but we have never bothered to remove them) Sorry the other reviewer has had such poor experience with the trains, but we have had no such problems. (We bought another train in January, and it, too has run great - we have yet to replace the batteries on that one) We don't pull it out every day, but it has definitely gotten a good bit of use.
With regard to the tracks and other *stuff* in this particular set - all fantastic. This comes with enough tracks and things to do a variety of configurations. I love that it has a 'mountain' with a bridge so the train can go over and under. That is also great if you get the elevated track to expand it (that's what I would get next if you want to expand after this set) The windmill and factory (or whatever it is) are really fun. The train can make them move, or your child can turn knobs by hand to make parts move. Nice for promoting curiosity, problem solving and a bit of basic physics:) My son (almost three now) especially loves the windmill. He likes to remove the wind catchers and use them... um, creatively... For small children you do need to realize that there are parts of this that will likely be used as hammers and 'shooters' etc. BUT the tracks are easy to put together, and generally stay together very well. It really is good for 2 1/2 and up, as the manufacturer says. Our 11 month old daughter LOVES to watch the trains go around too... she also likes to sit on the track and move things around, which frustrates brother and dad, but it's durable enough to survive a bit of rough treatment and I really don't worry about it hurting her (although there are some small pieces which are potential choking hazards)
I also really appreciate the details on the pieces. Straight tracks have little wrenches that have fallen off the trains (or perhaps left behind by workmen?) A tiny squirrel here, a piece of rope there... ALL the GeoTrax seem to have these small details in the molds, and the more I look the more I find. My son was the first to see a little owl looking out of one of the trees in a set we just got recently. They are the same colors as the rest of the pieces, but my husband and I are thinking about painting some of them. This is an aspect that really adds to the imaginative and dramatic play qualities of these toys.
If you like them, these sets are more than a bit addictive... Mom and Dad keep wanting to do more and more elaborate set ups, so beware how much space could be taken up. So far we have been impressed and happy with all except for the "Workin' Roundhouse", but young kids really don't *need* anything more than this set and maybe an extra train (to make it easier to share with friends, sibs or dad) to be really happy and creative with their play.
I recommend going to the Fisher-Price website to check out the details on what the different sets do and see detailed close-up pictures. Although none of the sets is all that expensive by itelf (given the quality, etc.) you can spend a lot of money if you get everything, so make sure you really know about what you are getting and that it is really what you want.

Melissa & Doug Wooden Train Cars Set Review

Melissa and Doug Wooden Train Cars Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this for my son because I know there is no lead paint in Melissa and Doug products. He loves the train itself. However, 3 of the trains, the passenger ones are longer than most train cars and have wheels that pivot, this causes problems when trying to move the train on the tracks. My 3 year old gets frustrated because these three train cars are always coming off the track. He got these for Christmas and now, almost a month later, he no longer wants to use the three troublsome cars.

Melissa & Doug Classic Wooden Figure Eight Train Set Review

Melissa and Doug Classic Wooden Figure Eight Train Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought this wooden set thinking I would be able to add Thomas Series of train engines, since the previous review said it was compatible. The set arrived with its own little red wooden train engine and coach, linked via magnets. The set is easy to assemble, but there are lots of loose gaps between the track pieces where they align with each other, causing the pieces to drift out of alignment. This causes the train to derail (come off the track) frequently. My little daughter was left wondering why the train never gets any further than one single piece of track segment.
Besides trying to realign them every time the train runs on the flat track, the train set also derails as you are climbing up the bridge (in fact, the front wheels of the engine go up in the air as you are pushing the engine up the incline when you are just beyond halfway through the upward incline - in other words the slope of the bridge wasn't constructed properly). So the child is expected to hold on to the engine and the coach with both hands to prevent it from derailing while going up the bridge.
The next thing I tried was with the standard Thomas Engine sets to see if any of these problems would be solved. I bought a set each of Thomas and Percy engines and coaches and then tried running them on this track set. The same problems of frequent derailing persisted (over the bridge and over the track joints).
So my overall impression is that its a very poorly designed set, which teaches the child more about accidents and derailing of trains, rather than how trains should run smoothly!
So I wouldn't recommend wasting money on this one and just spend a little extra for a good quality train set. You get what you pay for!

Melissa and Doug Deluxe Wooden Railway Set Review

Melissa and Doug Deluxe Wooden Railway Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This train set is absolutely awesome -- right out of the box. You can tell it has quality craftsmanship and from the start is a way better deal than the overpriced Thomas Train sets and track. My husband is a hobby woodworker and the first thing he said was "wow, this is much better quality than I was expecting for the price!"
I could not find another set with as many "goodies" as this one has (bridges, supports, roundhouse, two trains, etc), all in one box and WITHOUT a bunch of "extras" that a young child won't play with. Most of the high piece count sets I saw online were 50% people, trees and signs -- but this one is mostly all track, bridges and usable accessories! It comes with 2 trains and a little semi with a 5th wheel trailer that runs on the track as well -- very cute!
The layout plans they send you (4 in the box) are super helpful to combine designs with a little time and effort or use their designs. We spent about $20 at Menards and bought a 4x4 sheet of pre-sanded plywood to anchor this set to. The hubby routed the corners and edges smooth, and trimmed it down to about 4x3' to fit the train set. Then he predrilled and counter sunk screws into the track and the supports so everything is secured down. This is absolutely PERFECT setup for a 2 year old boy being, well, a 2 YEAR OLD! He's rough and still learning fine motor skill control, so it's much more fun to play on a set that doesn't fall over with clumsy, rough play!
So my hubby made some extra risers out of 2x4's and he built a "high rise" section of track to make one big "roller coaster" leg that went from end to end, sending the trains down the hill at a pretty fast clip, and our son giggles when they derail on the other end from such high speed!
We also purchased the Mountain Tunnel Accessory Set that looks not only realistic (way better than Imaginarium from Toys R Us and others we looked at), but also seperates into two pieces: the top comes off to make another tunnel, the bottom piece has two tunnels that criss-cross. Our son LOVES THIS! He can take the top piece off and put it over other places of the track all by himself. It's pretty sturdy, thick and hard plastic, but not indestructible of course. It's stood up to his rough play so far, and we're VERY pleased with the quality and durability. Amazon was the best price and shipping (not free when I bought it) that I found online.
The two trains included with this set run perfectly around the track -- the wheels/axles are placed at the very ends of the cars, which is absolutely necessary in design for the cars to go smoothly over the up or downward curves of hills. Otherwise, the ends of the car will catch on the track and the train will separate. We found this out when we used the big diesel train (3 piece set from Imaginarium @ Toys R Us) on the hills. While the diesel engine and the 3 axle car work fine, the 2 axle car catches because the axles are set farther in from the end. Melissa & Doug sell a very similar set and it will likely have the better design with no problems catching on the hills -- so I recommend their set over the Toys R Us one I bought.
EXCELLENT BUY, EXCELLENT TOY -- ALL the bells and whistles of the more expensive sets but at an affordable price and still a high quality set! Plus it is compatible with the big name cars and track (Thomas, Brio, etc). There are multiple manufacturers for THomas, however, and some of them have different sizes than others, so you have to watch. But if it fits on the regular size Thomas track, the cars AND the Thomas track are compatible with this set -- so very handy. (We did a lot of research into this before buying!)
The roundhouse is VERY GOOD QUALITY, and every bit as good as the Thomas one we saw in Toys R Us. Our local store has a train set (secured to a table) set up at the store for the kids to play with -- so we got a lot of ideas on setup from that, and also could have a hands on quality comparison. ALL THE PARTS to this set are good quality for a wooden set and we are absolutely, completely satisfied with this purchase.
So we recommend for the youngest engineers, that you anchor this set to a big piece of plywood or something, but just use screws and counter sink them, so they're out of the way but you can take it apart later when the child is older and can handle rearranging it and putting together the track by himself. Our little guy can do this and we have other track that he can put together and play with, but the main set is MUCH MORE FUN for him with it secured, until he's bigger and more coordinated!
We already have a little play table for him, so we made a small frame on the bottom of the trainset board to fit snuggly over the table we had and keep it from sliding or moving around. We can move this set to the floor or on the table, and even me, THE WIFE, can pick it up and move it without too much effort!
We added our customer pictures to the product images.
CHOOOOO CHOOOOOOO!

Step2 Deluxe Canyon Road Train & Track Table Review

Step2 Deluxe Canyon Road Train and Track Table
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We purchased this for my 2 year old son. He absolutely loves this table. He had gotten some wooden tracks and everytime someone would set them up for him he would tear them all apart and we would spend the next 1/2 hour searching for them all just a nightmare! The best thing about this is everything is connected no mess to clean up. My son has some wooden Thomas trains and some Play Along Thomas trains (metal ones) the problem with having the two different kinds of trains is none of the tracks would be compatible for both sets however this table really has no tracks only roads with stickers that look like tracks making it virtually possible to fit any small vehicle including hot wheels. My son has spent numerous hours everyday playing with this. The only time the lid goes on is after he goes to bed when I pick up his toys. I like that now I can store all his 50 some Thomas trains inside. Harold the Helicopter even has his own sticker landing pad. This was very easy to put together took at the most 10 minutes. The hardest part was my 2 year old son was standing next to me and when I was trying to put the decals on and was having the trains race at the same time. This table set has one bad thing and that is the little train and cars that came with my table were very cheap and arrived with wheels broken off one and a little windshield broken off of another this could create a choking hazard for little ones. I threw them all away! I did get a pamphlet to register my product with Step 2 and when I went to their website I found that this toy was rated one of the top 5 pre-school toys of 2005 by the Today Show! One more thing I want to mention is I did purchase it through this website it says on product info that it usually ships within 2-3 days well it took over a week to ship! It took 2 weeks from date of purchase until it arrived so if you are buying this for an event where you will need it by a certain date I would recommend purchasing it ahead of time.

This is a really cool addition to the already fun Geotrax, but not neccesarily good for 2 1/2 year olds. The whole elevation series is hard to build so the 2 1/2 year olds get bored quickly, the proper age is probably 3 1/2.
But the mountain is really fun. Two thumbs up.
