LEGO Winnie's House 5947 Review

LEGO Winnie's House 5947

The only concern that I have is Lego strategy not to include Tigger in this set ( that's why I give it 3 stars only). They make you to purchase another set with Tigger (and Piglet), because your child will want the whole crew. I really don't like this kind of manipulation when it comes to toys and would rather pay $5 more if another character was included here.
Other than that it is great. My daughter plays with it all the time. And of course I bought additional sets as this was the first Lego Duplo I got.

Mega Bloks Diego at Jaguar Mountain Bucket Review

Mega Bloks Diego at Jaguar Mountain Bucket

I got this set along with two other Diego Mega Brands sets for my 5 year old for Christmas. All the sets can be used together, and really gives my kids some extra pieces to pretend with. Both my older son and his 2-year-old brother have lots of fun building different animal adventure scenes.
We also got a pack of cheapy, plastic toy wild animals to go along with this...you can find those just about anywhere for just a dollar or two. And with all of the extra animals we added, they really enjoy themselves (...and no fighting over the only jaguar that comes with this set!!!)
Well-made, sturdy toy set that will likely be around for a while.

LEGO Duplo Basic Bricks Review

LEGO Duplo Basic Bricks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We had a really difficult time finding a decent starter set of Duplo bricks. They just don't sell the simple sets in the stores anymore, which makes no sense because they are the BEST sets. So we ordered this set from Lego. For about half what they're asking here. I've noticed a trend of Lego having the fairest prices of all the stores selling their products. Odd. Anyway, for anything Lego, I would definitely do some comparison shopping using the company website first.
With this set, I was concerned beforehand that there might not be a wide enough variety of pieces, despite the generous number (80 pieces total). This was due in great part to the fact that I couldn't seem to find any photos of the side of the box where they give the detailed information and really this is the only information you're wanting before making a rather sizable Lego purchase, right? Since no one else has mentioned this, I'll show what a total geek I am by publishing these details.
Here's the breakdown of the pieces by size:
56 2x2 peg square pieces
20 2x4 peg rectangular pieces
2 2x4 peg pieces (1/2 thickness of regular pieces)
1 2x6 peg long rectangular piece
1 2x8 peg ex-long rectangular piece
And by color!
14 red
13 each of green and yellow
12 blue
8 each of light green and orange
5 each of black and white
2 transparent blue 2x2 peg pieces
The transparent pieces were an immediate source of tension between my two daughters; they both love them. The entire set is fantastic. It's just the right amount of pieces, and I didn't feel like Lego was as stingy with the rectangles as in the previous 'My First Lego Set' we'd bought. Or maybe it's just that we now finally have enough Legos to really build something! I do wish there had been a couple more large rectangles, and maybe a couple more transparent pieces, but that's not really a gripe.
I think if you're starting out with Duplos, there isn't a better set out there with the right amount of creative, open-ended pieces and affordability. We would have started with this one had it been sold in stores. Another point in its favor, at least as far as I'm concerned, is that it was not made in China or Mexico, but rather in Denmark, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

LEGO Duplo Building Set - 71 Pieces (5380) Review

LEGO Duplo Building Set - 71 Pieces (5380)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a father of ten, we've had a number of Duplo sets over the years. Whenever we need to replenish our supply (this year being one such time), we look for a new set based on three basic factors: wheels, people, and price.
Price is a general constraint for us. We're willing to spend $25-$30 for a set of Duplo blocks. They're tremendously durable, and you can even run them through the dishwasher (in one of those cages used for baby bottle accessories). Within that price range, we try to maximize the number of bricks we get. If wanting only bricks (no special pieces), then you should be able to get 80 or more bricks starting at $20 on sale. If you want those parts (wheels and a character)--and in our experience, they are some of the most used parts when the kids play--then you are looking in that $25-$30 range with at least 65 other blocks.
All of our kids, especially the boys, loved having the wheels. They would make cars and trucks, and eventually airplanes and rolling robots. Sure, they could make many of these things without the wheels, but they seemed to play longer when they were making wheeled things.
Both the boys and girls like the little characters, but the girls would often take the Duplo person away to play with other dolls or for other activities. The boys would almost always make the boy a driver, or some person who was running from (or fighting) the giant robot, tank, or whatever they built with the other blocks.
Many people might not think of Duplo blocks as educational, but they are a great tool for teaching little ones about colors, numbers, and matching. It also helps fine-motor coordination as they try to assemble the bricks (especially at the youngest ages). We have a special needs child who was grown very fond of the bricks, and really enjoys assembling and disaassembling small stacks of them (this year's purchase was targeted for him).
**A SPECIAL NOTE ON THEME SETS**
Unless you have a specific desire to get your kids the specially themed Duplo sets (e.g., Bob the Builder), I recommend skipping those and getting just a basic set like this one for these reasons:
1) Cost. Themed sets cost more for less. You end up paying for the name/theme, and little else.
2) You simply get more blocks with the non-themed sets, and more blocks means more fun play.
3) Themeed sets usually have more special (unique) bricks. They can be used with any set, but those specialized bricks often aren't used as much (based on our experiences) in general play.
4) Most kids don't keep the sets together as displayed on the box. They like to tear things apart and build new things. Knowing that they will do that anyway, it seems to decrease the value of the special theme sets. By the time they are old enough to care about keeping sets togehter (or restoring the set to its original layout after playing with the bricks), the kids are about ready for the first regular Lego set.
**ONE EXCEPTION ON THEME SETS (ANIMALS)**
The only theme sets my wife and I will occasionally purchase are the ones with the animal figures and extra people. These are a great gift for a child who already has a supply of Duplo blocks, as they add to the fun.

LEGO DUPLO Bob the Builder - Scoop and Lofty at the Building Yard Review

LEGO DUPLO Bob the Builder - Scoop and Lofty at the Building Yard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While my son loves Scoop and Lofty and plays with them a ton, there is basically nothing else to this set, as the pieces you are left won't build much of anything. You can see on the box that you are only able to barely build the facade of a house with a window and two roof pieces, and a frame of a building. You at least get a caravan/little house with a door, windows, and stairs with the Travis set, my pick for the best of the series. Even the Muck set that comes with the recycling bins and chute offers more play value.
With all the vehicles, you can't play heavy with them, as the pieces usually pop off. This set is very pricey, so I would only get it if your child has to have these two characters, becauase that's all you are paying for. It should have come with a little something better to build, especially for the price.

LEGO DUPLO Thomas & Friends - Harold the Helicopter Review

LEGO DUPLO Thomas and Friends - Harold the Helicopter

My son just turned three and he got this as a birthday present. Harold makes a great addition to the Lego Thomas sets or he would be great on his own. The pieces are the perfect size for preschoolers' hands and they snap together easily. My son enjoys putting Harold together and loading cargo with the pully.
A fan of all things Thomas AND of anything with propellers, my son plays with Harold for hours. This toy encourages imaginative play and works well with other Duplo blocks. It's sturdy and fun. Highly recommended!

My daughter absolutely loves this toy. I think it's a little hard to figure out the setup of it and it doesn't come with instructions, but it's just off imagination. She isn't usually a toy player. My kids love Mega Blocks, but I guess I expected for the price I was getting a regular size tub of blocks. Even for a 2 year old, this was a TINY assortment of blocks. My boys love to play this game, but it needs extension. It is not that much fun if you follow the game's instructions. You have to kind of make up your own game using the pieces included. Mega Bloks Dora's Buildable Playground Adventures Review

Mega Bloks Dora's Buildable Playground Adventures
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this set for my daughter because she loves to build things and she loves Dora. I had great hopes that she would really enjoy this set. She loved the babies and she loved trying to build the playground, until she could not keep the pieces together. I stepped in to help, and I too had problems trying to keep the blocks together and secure. The square play area that is central to the "playground" kept coming apart. And there aren't all that many pieces to the set, so it has limited options as to how you can construct the playground. After a short while, she became frustrated and bored with the set and has not played with the set since then. She is 3-1/2 years old and is able to put together train sets, Lego's and Lincoln Logs, so it is not for her lack of being able to master the building part of the sets. It's like she is a junior engineer in training. It's just the pieces are not tight fitting and lead to the designs falling apart.
The idea behind the playground is fantastic, because what child doesn't love to be at a playground? But the pieces do not lock together very well, which can lead to a lot of frustration for a child, and they are definitely not as well made as Lego. There are other pieces like the ladder that look like they should attach to something (from looking at the pictures on the box), yet we could not figure out what they attached to, or HOW they attached to something. They did not fit into any of the holes on other pieces.
On the plus side, the slide is very cute, and if you can get it to stay anchored, it is fun to have the babies and Dora slide down it, and the swing is also fun to put the babies in to push them on it. The set does allow your child to be imaginative as they map out play at the park, but if the park does not stay together, it may be a disappointment. We had considered getting the Diego set when we got the Dora set, but decided against it at the time. I will not be getting the Diego set now that I see the blocks don't secure very well, and I am returning the unopened "Cars" sets as well. I am going to go back to Lego, and hope that they come out with Dora or Diego sometime in the future.
