(More customer reviews)We purchased this award-winning set for our preschool-aged son who really enjoys toys like Marble Run, Legos, and Brio. We thought it a good fit for his mechanical engineering interests. The set itself is fairly durable and small hands can easily manipulate the chunky pieces which fit together snugly. The handled storage container is an added convenience. However, soon after purchase I noticed (like other reviewers) that my son was not motivated to play with this set on his own. Often, it would go undisturbed for months. One day, his preschool teacher said they were interested in purchasing this set for the classroom. Because of my own experience I cautioned her on the purchase and offered our set to the class for a "test drive." To my surprise, for the week it was on loan it was the most played with toy in the room. My son seemed to love the kit at school, but not at home. I realized that this toy is at it's best with a group of children because they can so easily work and create together. In a group setting the toy became fun, cooperative play. Because this set offers a generous number of four-sided building pieces, chilren can add-on and build from all sides. I can understand why in a previous review a Kingergarten teacher gave this toy five stars...because that is the environment this toy was made for it seems. It would be best for families with multiple children of similar age, play groups, and classroom learning. As a parent, I love this quality toy and the creativity and cooperation it inspires but now, we keep the bucket at Grandma's house. When all of the Grandkids are there they spill out the parts and go to work.

iPlay Build-A-Road Review

(More customer reviews)My son received this for his second birthday and I originally chalked it up as just another race track. But it is different, and my son has played with it nearly every day for the last year. The track comes in little pieces and so is extremely flexible. Easy to design in different shapes. By 2.5 he was able to put the pieces together himself. I wish they showed pictures of the cars because I don't know if they are the same ones that my son has. They are soft instead of hard and oversized for little hands. He plays with them on and off the track. For extra fun, roll some of the track into a little wheel and put the car into it like a hampster. He loves to do that!

Fisher-Price TRIO Dinosaur Review

(More customer reviews)I don't post a lot of reviews on anything, but I feel like the Trio sets deserve the praise. I'll keep it brief with my personal pros, cons, and a summary.
PROS
1) Sturdy pieces. Nothing breakable here! (If we have grandkids way down the road, these will still be great)
2) Nice variety. Most of the blocks look similar at a glance but many connect in different directions.
3) Creations that are built will stay together.
4) Wide age range. Our 4 yr old makes cute stuff but our 10 year old and his friends also make guns, spaceships, tanks, submarines, robots, etc. You name it.
5) Intuitive. Just like Legos, the kids just know what to do.
6) No tiny pieces. Tired of the really tiny lego pieces? I am. These are easy to see and pick up -before- you hear them in the vacuum cleaner.
CONS
1) Price. I feel the price is high for plastic, like Legos. I'm patiently watching Amazon and Fisher Price for discounts.
2) Hard to snap together. I have to concede these are a sort of hard to snap, but don't make that the deciding factor. Your kids will overcome this.
SUMMARY
I originally bought a few Trio sets just because they were on sale, in fact they were sort of "filler" Christmas gifts for our younger son. They turned out to be a huge surprise and I absolutely recommend them if you have boys between 3-10 years old. (It still amazes me at how much my 10 year old plays with them.) My wife is an artist and she loves the creative aspect. We both appreciate that our 4 year old can actually play with his Trio creations, they aren't fragile like so many of our Lego sets. As a last note: When we turn off the TV and the kids have to find a toy or game or book or something to do, playing with the Trio blocks is frequently the choice they make, and that says more than everything I've written here.

These stay together well! They are colorful and fun to play with after the building is done. My 9yo enjoys them as much as the younger children. I wished the price was more reasonable. Mega Bloks Dragon Boat Review

(More customer reviews)We bought this to go with the Kai-Lan 75-piece "super set" mostly to get the special pieces (the boat, the Rintoo figure and a couple others). I think it might be a little limited on its own because there aren't that many plain regular pieces but otherwise the worst criticism I can make is that the color variation between the two sets occasionally makes mix-and-matching a little hard for the OCD amongst us. The size works out well for us as my daughter at 2 1/2 is not yet ready for Legos but is quite dextrous and is well past the big basic Mega Bloks. She is just starting to get into imaginative play but since her mother (i.e. me) has no imagination whatsoever, basing our games on the themes and storylines of a cartoon she enjoys makes it much easier to wing it. We tried several other types of build-rebuild toys before including Clipos and Krinkles but this is the first one she seems to have got the hang of. One caveat: the flowers and the small round flat 4-peg pieces are potential choking hazards so if buying for a young toddler (or one just still in the habit of putting things in their mouth) I would take them out and put them away somewhere safe until the child is a bit older.

(More customer reviews)For a house with zero guns, and the most violence they're exposed to is New Super Mario Bros. Wii, my kids love their Trio pieces due to the variety of guns they can build! Long ones? Yup. Tiny ones? Oh yeah, LOTS. Big, chunky ones with wings and eyes? Yep, somehow it's a gun, too. Sometimes they'll even shake things up and build a space ship...then include a bare minimum of four guns on them.
Now, the Trio pieces are not as easy as LEGO, so you and your kids will initially find them harder to snap together and apart, but the thrill and desire behind expert gun making won't keep any child away from the building.
***My wife is FORCING me to say that it comes with a design booklet to help you make interesting things like a giraffe, which she built with them on day one. She's ignoring the fact that it was soon destroyed to make a gun version with the eyeballs becoming laser eyes. LASER EYES!!!

I purchased this as a back up when TOMY informed me they no long support parts and our engine was acting up. My husband repaired it but we weren't taking any chances so decided to purchase another so the "Big Kid" and grandchildren would not be without- it stays at Grandma and Grandpa's house and Grandpa has been known to play with it even when the granddkids aren't around.

My budding architects and city planners have used the blocks delightedly and they are rarely NOT in use, but (theoretically, at least) the canvas tote bag is a plus for storage as well. Fisher-Price TRIO Shark Adventure Review

(More customer reviews)This toy is pretty cool when put together & seems pretty durable. Fairly easy for an adult to assemble, although some pieces need a bit of force to get them together. The age range on this is 4-7. It would be fun for 4-7 year olds to play with once assembled. I'm sure older children would be able to assemble part of it, but there is no way a 4 year old is going to be able to actually assemble this since many of the pieces go together really hard. So, since the pieces go together really hard, that means they also come apart really hard. Be prepared to rip your fingernails off when it finally breaks free. Fortunately I only lost one & haven't been brave enough to continue the disassembly. Flinging the shark around with the crane is really the highlight of this toy.

LEGO? Road Construction Set (6187) Review

(More customer reviews)My son loves building and especially loves Legos and saw this set and really wanted it and given how great these small Lego's are for hand/finger dexterity as well as further developing a strong pincer grasp we bought them. Right out of the box I could tell that this set was going to be a little difficult for him. There are A LOT of little and TINY pieces and some of the pieces were VERY hard for me to snap in let alone my four year old. But, that didn't stop us, we took our time and slowly went over each step together and looked for all the pieces we needed and really enjoyed building the vehicles. I'm thrilled we purchased this set as we had such a nice time working on this together and as I mentioned Legos are fantastic for the hands/fingers. But I would definately note that the box does say 4+ and unless your child is used to making fairly complex vehicles and has an excellent pincer grasp with pretty strong hands, this will not be something he will be able to do on his own. I did read someone's review who said their 5 year old loves it and had no problems putting these vehicles together, I absolutely believe that as there is a big difference in these particular abilities specifically in boys between 4 and 5. I have mentioned "he" or "boys" in this review because although many girls would enjoy this set, girls almost always have a much more highly developed pincer grasp at the age of 4 than boys so I really felt that what I was trying to relay was more boy specific.
Given all the other reviewers did such an excellent job in letting everyone know not only their experience with this set but also what the set contained etc. I did not want to bore everyone with the same information they most likely already read in another review. This review was based on our experiences in order to aid you in your purchasing decision. When it all comes down to it, no one knows your childs abilities better than you do. I think it's important to be able to set proper expectations for a toy and a lot of times the age limits the manufacturers put on the boxes don't quite coincide with a childs abilities at that age. So, I hope this review has given you some additional information as to what you "may" experience if buying this for a four year old. Overall, I feel this set is a great buy and fantastic for aiding in the further development of the skills I mentioned above as well as learning to "read" the directions (no words are used so even a child who can't read yet can follow the directions) and developing patience, I highly recommend it!
