Neurosmith Sunshine Symphony Review

Neurosmith Sunshine Symphony
Average Reviews:

This was a gift from a friend and our 8 week old would watch it while we were in the car. He has grown up with it and at 18 months it is still one of his favorite toys. The music is pleasant so it doesn't drive you nuts the way other electronic toys can and our toddler has learned to touch it to keep the music going. He has even increased his fine motor skills by turning the switches on and off in the back. We just bought three more to give out as gifts to our friends that are having babies. This was a great toy.

Musical Hands Mat Review

Musical Hands Mat

Our two-year old loves this toy, and he's had it since he was 18-months (when he also loved it.) The sound quality is really, really good, but besides that it's a lot of fun for him to make music without the fear of breaking little keys. Everytime we have friends over with their little ones, they end up wanting to know where we got this, because their kids end up loving it too.

Kidoozie Playful Pals Piano Review

Kidoozie Playful Pals Piano
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My child received this toy at around 6 months. Both he and his 3 year old brother enjoy playing with it. Children can create their own songs or let the piano play songs for them. The songs are fun and upbeat and some are different from the standard songs that you hear on most of the baby toys. Once a song starts to play, you can change the instrument sound which plays the song. All the time your child or the piano is making music, darling animal figures pop up and down, see-saw, etc., to the beat.

Let's Play Together Melody Mixin' Drum Review

I only bought this toy so I could get free shipping, but my 14 month old daughter loves it! She puts all sorts of things inside it, and it's quite sturdy. The bean bags sometimes get lost, and it does NOT have a volume control, but it keeps her attention longer than most toys. Wish I'd bought it when she was a bit younger.

LeapFrog Learn & Groove Alphabet Drum Review

LeapFrog Learn and Groove Alphabet Drum
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This toy seemed like a great idea and I bought it for my 1 year son with great expectations. It is a small drum, that lights up and plays music and sounds when tapped. My son loves to tap on the table, so it seemed like the perfect gift for him. Unfortunately, I was disapointed due to some serious design flaws.
The drum has 3 different playing modes: Alphabet mode, music mode and dancing mode. On alphabet mode, every time it is tapped upon, it displays a letter of the alphabet while speaking it loud, in order. On music mode, it plays music and rhythmic lights, inviting the kid to tap on the drum and in dancing mode, it tries to suggest movement to the kid with voice commands and pictures (clap your hands, hit the drum, etc).
The drum has 2 language settings (English or Spanish) and also a volume control (low and high settings). The high setting is not very loud.
Unlike some other reviewers say, this drum does not teach counting. They probably refer to an older drum model from leapfrog (look for leapfrog learning drum here on amazon). This one only teaches the alphabet.
In all, this seemed a great idea to me. The drums' reaction to the child movements would encourage tapping on it, teaching cause/effect relationship. I did not care much about the alphabet as my son is too young for that, but didn't mind if he got some introduction to it anyway.
So, what are the design flaws?
Well, to start, the sound made by the drum when hit is very low. On music and dancing mode, you can barely hear it as it is completely shaded by the background music, which is played independently of hitting the drum. Still on the music and dancing modes, the drum lights follow some random patterns, that is, they keep drawing figures on the drum whether it is being hit or not. When a child taps the drum, the figures change, but as they would have changed anyway, it is not easy to realize that the change was caused by hitting.
So much for cause/effect relationship on these 2 modes.
Only on the alphabet mode, it is easier to realize that tapping the drum has an effect on it, as it speaks loudly and displays a letter in reaction. For my one year baby though, this effect is not very interesting, as he will tap very quickly on the drum causing the alphabet to be interrupted and he will not even look at the letter because his little hand is tapping on it. I believe that with time, he may do it more patiently.
Another terrible flaw is the sound made by hitting the drum, if you manage to hear it. There are several different possible sounds (as if they were the sounds of a multiple drum table), some of them quite nice, others quite boring. And it doesn't seem to be a way of choosing the sound, so sometimes your hit is rewarded with a clear sound, other times with a barely noticeable thugh.
In all, these flaws completely remove one of the things I expected my kid to learn from this toy, which is cause/effect relationship. So far, he has not been enthusiastic of the toy, though he will play with it for a few minutes if I show it to him and tap on it first.

Make your youngster's learning experience more upbeat with the LeapFrog Learn and Groove Alphabet Drum alphabet drum. Each tap of this drum introduces baby to the alphabet and improves vocabulary in both English and Spanish. Engaging music and interactive play sharpen motor skills as baby learns to tap, crawl, and dance. It features three delightful learning modes, including Alphabet, Dance Along, and Music Play. Babies quickly catch on to cause and effect, as each tap rewards them with lights, letters, and music. Music Play mode lets the child freely explore music, fostering open-ended play and creative movement. And this drum's lively, roll-along song teaches them to crawl after the drum. Ideal for children ages six months to three years, this stimulating toy entertains and educates for hours. The Beat Goes On The Alphabet Drum is built to withstand the throws and whacks from typical toddler handling. Parents will appreciate the volume control as it keeps the music at an enjoyable level. To prolong battery life, the drum shuts off if it hasn't been used for awhile. Plus, at approximately 8 inches tall, it helps babies learn to sit up on their own. Both the English and Spanish voices of the Alphabet Drum are audible and easy to understand. Bright colors, uplifting music, and a fun design make this a favorite in any child's toy box. Award-Winning Features It is no surprise that the LeapFrog Alphabet Drum was a winner of the 2006 iParenting Media Greatest Products Award. This drum teaches language, music, and motor skills as a strong foundation for the child's future. Children love to dance, roll it around, or chase after it, and as a versatile toy, it can be played with through multiple development stages. What's in the Box LeapFrog drum and 3 AA batteries.

He has played with it off and on all day long every day this week. I watch his coordination improve as he figures out how to start the music, etc. It's just wonderful fun!

Found this pretty cheap at TJ Maxx. Thank goodness - it's OK - but gets old fast for the little ones. The music it plays isn't that stimulating and it's heavy and awkward for my son (18 mos) to carry around. Unless you get a really good deal on this ($15) DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY.

B. Meowsic Keyboard Review

B. Meowsic Keyboard
Average Reviews:

This came in the mail today for my 2.5 year old's Christmas present, and I can't stop playing with it (while he is napping). We ordered it through Amazon for $24.99, and it was fulfilled through Target. The age right on the front states 2 - 6 years old, so the reviews talking about this 'not being a stepping stone to a real piano' and 'not being able to play chords, or 2 notes at once' is ridiculous. This is not meant to be a 'starter' keyboard for someone who wants to play piano. It is a giant cat face, for goodness sakes! It is super cute, very durable, and it is hilarious to play with. It has like 20 songs that kids can sing along to, you can change the type of music (blues, samba, rock, etc) and use the tempo keys to slow or make faster. The microphone pulls out, and then there is a button to make it retract. It has simple buttons that my 2 year old will figure out very easily - they are large and clear (play, record, volume with arrows, the button for the music to play, etc), all very big buttons with clear symbols. So if you are looking for something that you can play chords, or adult piano songs, or introduce your child to the piano, then find something that is not shaped like a giant cat with keys for teeth. If you want something fun that your young child can play and experiment with music and sound, and also has the added 'meow' feature that turns all your songs into cute 'meowing' songs, then this is definitely what you are looking for.

Our two year old son has this Moo-Sical xylophone in his preschool class and they all absolutely love it. We have a Gymboree xylophone at home, but it doesn't have the piano option - that makes it 100% better than a xylophone alone. The piano keys add so much, that we plan to get one for our home, too. One at preschool isn't enough. Now, we can play with our son simultaneously. They'll each have a xylophone. A+++++++

Vtech Preschool Learning Alphabet Apple Review

Vtech Preschool Learning Alphabet Apple
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My grandson is 5 and has autism. Teaching children with developmental delays is challenging, to say the least. One must get their attention, then keep it, then make the best use of it. This "laptop" does all this and more. My grandson has owned and loved his Alphabet Apple for a couple of years and he is the only child in his class who can tell you the sound of all the letters in the alphabet. So if you ask him, "what does man (house, canary, apple, anything-at-all) start with?" he can tell you in about one-fourth of a second - even words he's never heard before, so this is not memorization! His teacher is always calling him "smart boy" - music to my ears! To be fair, he has a lot of laptops that gloss over the letter sounds, but this is the one that he plays with the most. He doesn't use all the features, or even use some of them properly, but it is teaching him something and doing a good job of it. I'm sure a neurotypical child would get even more out of it. We don't let this one get lost in the closet because he is always asking for his Alphabet Apple. Worth it at twice the price.

We bought this toy for our 9months old daughter and she loves it. The music is great. But, the English version voice is very annoying and creepy. It will be so much better to use the children voice or something sweet voice. Not the creepy man's voice.
